The worst board I have ridden in recent memory is a.....wait for it....McTavish Sumo!
7' x 21 (and something) x 3".
Didn't paddle very well. Absolutely impossible to duckdive. Fat rails that gave such a dis-connected feel on the wave I got rid of it quick smart.
Not a patch on a Takayama Scorpion 6'8" Surftech (boo hiss, LOL).
I was happy enough riding a 6'6" McTavish scooter quad in smaller stuff. Trim across the flat sections and then step back and jam a vertical turn....fun. Lacked control in larger waves, hollower waves though.
Still it had a beautiful orange and white tint and I would have kept it to ride every so often but needed to sell a board to fund my used DVS carbon reef runner and the McT scooter was the easiest board to sell in my quiver for some fast money.
No regrets though as the Surftech is simply more versatile.
The first surf I had on the scorpion was on the biggest day of waves we had earlier this year.
Only rode it as I rolled up from work with only the scorpion in the car and it was going off.
The scorpion handled it.
I've since ridden the scorpion in every kind of conditions since and can safely say its a desert island board for me.
Before you all start sending me hate mail a fellow surfer down Sydney way who's the same stats as me and shares almost identical taste in boards/brands has a Sumo in a 6'6" (eps) and absolutely loves it.
So no doubt the Sumo I had was suited to a much larger surfer than one displacing 92kgs like my self.
Moral of this story?
Careful not to go with too much foam with a Sumo.
Or buy a Surftech Takayama scorpion (boo, hiss, LOL).

The thing I forgot to mention is the McT's have great re-sale value which is helpful for someone as curious about trying as many and varied different boards as I (board whore....plain and simple).
So I bought the Sumo used and sold it again with minimal (mini-mal) financial loss so it made for an inexpensive Q&A for me.
The shorter Sumos coming through shops from GSI look like a much better volume for me.
Too bad they are GSI though if they aren't SLX glassing they should be ok.
But I've already got the scorpion and its lighter weight epoxy (which I don't find the least bit corky for my weight) and quad option means its not going anywhere for a long time.
