I'd be interested to know all those fin guru's opinions on a 2 + 1 fin set up for a longboard v's a thruster set up.

I'm finding my UF8 quite stiff through the tail. It is a pintail and I did have the board made for bigger waves, and there haven't been any since I got it. This stiffness turns me off wanting to take it out in the samller stuff. It might be that since I have been riding shorter boards lately I am noticing it more.

I'm now questioning if I should have gone with a thruster set up.

daneli i was not convinced of the thruster setup on a lb.....but now im buying one just for that reason. smaller surf i had was at lm 1ft and i ran 5s on the side a 3 as the pivot. the board held when i was on the nose(i was expecting the tail to slide). so easy to turn, even while on the nose you could make adjustment. i had nice 2-3ft straddie and ran 7s allround(like the day i saw you) and it was crazy good. plus this board is a 9'1 and easily out performs my plus being on a shorty you will appreciate more being set up as thruster.
eg yesterday i wish i had the cw thruster over my as i found my so hard to turn after riding the thruster 9'1

For it's sort of a mood thing.

I still have my Billy Hamilton HyPerform Tufflite. It came with a 7 inch Takayama, and tiny GL sides. I've upsized the sides, and I really like the smaller fins overall on that board. But you need to surf it aggressively, and off the tail. I'm not always in that mood!!

Also, because I surf Point Break quite a lot, I go for large centre fins with a fair bit of base for drive. In smaller beachies, I definitely notice that the board feels stiff, and hard to turn. Yet on the points, the same set-up loves the long drawn turns on the open face, and even harder tighter turns on the points.

My EvoII feels great in all conditions. I think an 8" Fluid Foils centre fin, not a Wiz Fin, and the GX side bites.

You should be able to find a 5.5 inch centre fin, or a 6 inch. This size fin is almost Thruster Size. Give it a try.

www.trueames.com/search?x=0&y=0&q=small+box - available in various small sizes.

Here's their range in 6-7 inches. Some versions like Cali Classic is available in 6".
trueames.com/t/surf/size/6-7

These fins will get you very close to a thruster set-up, while retaining your centre box.

FCS do small box fins now too. Those striped fins.

Does Red & Blue stripes suit your board!?
I like this fin. Circa 6 inches.

I've got a 6 inch and while it is an improvement it still doesn't hit the spot.

I'm thinking of tryin a cutaway 6in on the smaller stuff. I had one of these in my Munro and it was the best longboard feel I have come across.

I think Simondo is right on the Single fin being a point break board. While the McTavish website says the UF8 is for beachies as well, I had it made for larger point days and maybe I need to rack it and only bring it out on these days.

Shapers make 4.5"-5.5" centre box fins that will turn your setup to thruster size.

Oh oh oh, .......shoulda put a fin on it....

Small middle fins make midlength to tight to turn IMO, sometimes going bigger or more rake can help, the largest black dolphin is what I use in my 7ft egg or sometimes the footy fin and the clear volan Is the latest attempt...
