even thou i don't have a surfing sup at present, all the talk of great waves last week got me thinking about which sups i had handled it the best

my best was the psh 8'9 comp lite ripper. it was really comfortable in those parts of a wave.

next was a 8' 10 dc swallow tail. it was the best bigger wave board i've had.

what your best

cheers

Today I went out in over head high conditions on my coreban fusion. There was lots of water movement out the back but I managed to catch a few really harmless big fat ones ones.

At times on the wave I got some uncontrollable speed wobbles on the board, it was glassy but a bit lumpy, I was bouncing all over the place, even felt like I was gettin airborne in patches.

I haven't been out in conditions as big and fast as today before on a smaller board. I think maybe a longer board would have been more suitable.

Still ace fun though - what was the question?.

here's a pic - Vicco is so ace - had this to myself for over 2 hours - I really feel for you qld guys, I'd rather cold water than hot headed crowds.

Hi Laceys Lane,
Did you ride the psh 8-9 as a quad or thruster in barrelling waves? If you used both set ups which did you like best? What conditions suited either set up?

never rode it as a quad. used the centre fin that came with the board and am2's as side fins. i like my sups to be a bit drivey. i don't like slippery feeling setups.

also i'm not talking death slabs- more like good point surf

hey noel, greenmount and alley when it's good. actually stall a bit for them when it's good.

cheers

Mark, you need to take my 8'6 DMS for a spin sometime, I think you'd be blown away.

My fav is my Dc 8.8 got my first barrel on it 3 weeks ago
the prounced double concave in the tail and the single in front really makes this board a true surf sup ,imo it certanly makes an average surfer like me ,look better than average.

It will take the drop like a 6.10 surf board and it is at home in 1ft to 12ft faces .
I also have the Dc8.10 which is my 2nd choice

Ive tryed a few of the other boards but am always open to trying others

you wonder how short they will go with the surf perforance sup ?

anyway the tides about right to go and find the next barrell

Not quite a barrel but the Naish Hokua loves these sucky sections! and has my vote for being one of the best SUPs for hollow waves.

It's 8'6 x 28 x 4 1/4" to be honest I have not been surfing much of late so stability is an issue for me in rough waters right now but when on your game or in clean conditions it is no issue. It's the only SUP I have ridden that you actually forget about the board and just surf how you can.

Very light at about 6 kgs before grip. Bamboo veneer deck and bottom.

Best SUP boards for barrel riding for me have been my 2 guns, the one I took to the Maldives last year but broke a few weeks later, and my new DTM 9'1" gun. Old one was 27 1/2" wide very narrow tail, new one 27 3/4" same width tail but much thinner rails.

The Maldives was an eye opener for me as to how well a suitable designed SUP can ride the barrel, as it was so consistent allowing for 10 + barrels each session. This meant you could muck around with trim and positioning as it is a lot more suptle on a SUP. The key design ingredient is reduction of area overall, in the middle and particularly on the tail, combined with decent rocker, so the thing can fit into the curves associated with tube riding.

Had one of the better SUP barrels I have had so far - this morning on a solid 2x overhead freight train at one of our local reefs - the new gun just held its line beautifully and came screaming out

yep i saw this one this morning the old guy did it up again i got the first wave of the set to be an average wave only to come off the back and see a big wide bomb the first one cleaned me right up, then i came up finaly, there was another very wide smoking wall i thought oh crap not again only to look into the pit and see Goatman screaming through the guts of it on his new DTM Gun and as he flew past me yelling at the top of his lungs i couldnt help but smile as i got pumped again wow was a classic one thats for sure! What a day
Sorry no pics as no one is gunna shoot ya when the surfs cooking!

I was happy with the McT in last weekends swell. Haven't been barrelled on it but it seems to handle most conditions pretty well. I replaced the quads with a bigger thruster setup and was so impressed I've left the new setup in to see how it goes in smaller waves.

Hey Corey, is that the Pro?

Same here, with even less luck, so the best board for the barrel for me would be an... inflatable, to keep my teeth as long as possible ;-)

Joking aside, I bought myself proteck (rubber edged) fins for hollow days...

hey thomo, thats a really good setup. i reckon just stick with that and really get to know it.perhaps just fiddle with the centre placement. it doesn't take much to make a difference. a bit back, a bit forward and zero in on that spot and mark it. that way you have a referal point if you feel like changing a bit for a bigger day or smaller day

Yeah OD, the DC 8'8" squeezes in there quite well (especially when wearing a suit):

The Stand Sure 8'2" Fiber Flex goes OK in the pit too:

classic tube riding shot that first one casso - nothing to do with any board. take the paddle out and you wouldn't be able to pick what you were surfing.

Best board to get in the barrell is the best board to get out of the barrell. Simple!
Unless you are surfing overhead pits that board is pretty much going to resemble a scaled up shortboard, low rails, pulled in nose and tail. Not saying it cant be done on anything else, just not deep and with consistancy.
Cheers
