You have a few options, I suggest look for something 14', around 30" wide and around 300 litres or more. Choice will depend a bit on your local conditions, what you intend doing with it and your balance & fitness:


Flat water:
DC Makaru ( I'm nearly in your weight class, I have one. Dale could possibly tweak the shape a little if you have a particular need, you could talk to him)
Coreban Edge looks good on paper, not sure if/where there ae any in OZ yet
The new 14 x 30 Fanatic Falcon looks very good on paper for big blokes
Bark Laird looks real good too, haven't been on one but might be a bit low on volume for you

Allrounder/downwind:
Coreban Dart
Walk on Water GSR (I have one of these too, I love it for DW)
Starboard open ocean ( discontinued for 2013 but there might be a shop demo or second hand one come up, it's a bit narrow at 28" but pretty stable)
Fanatic 14' Ocean, also a bit narrow but stable and heaps of volume.

See if you can demo a few ( if you're in melb pm me for how/where to get on a couple of these to try).

Also You might even get on a 17' naish glide if your balance is good, there is some good second-hand buying on those.

My good friend Sir Cartoon is correct, forget the Naish they dont like big people it seems (you would need to see my earlier rant) but you might also consider this;

I have one bought in December, its heavy, but its tough, goes ok on FW, I can surf it in up to 3' runners and most importantly its 30" wide, and despite what everyone else will tell you 30 wide is the magic number for mine.

And that magic number comes into its own in the ocean or choppy conditions, you are gonna be a whole lot happier when you are standing on it longer than climbing onto it when everyone else is falling off. Unless of course you have great balance

At the price, its a good buy - and no its not mine for sale, someone elses

A lot of the smaller club comps only run 12'6 racing, in which case Fanatic 12'6 x 30.5 is probably the best suite for your size, very wide and stable. Otherwise 14' are good option if you have the storage space.

There are a few Fanatic 12'6 on the Buy & Sell section.

New big Fanatic 14' x 30" is actually an all rounder by design not just a flat water shape.
At 317 L it'll definitely hit the mark for big guys.

what the Goatman said. I've been on the white fanatic a few times and it barely floats me, but in a 12'6 I go OK on the Naish 12'6 x 30 glide - only about 10l more volume than the fanatic but it's put where you need it. There's a 12'6 by 31.5 Starby Race as well, about 290 litres, super stable but it's a bit of a slug in most conditions and a lot of wasted volume up front IMO. Coreban Vision has tons of volume on paper but I've not seen or been on one.

really though for blokes your (our) size it's a wider 14 you want*, give the 12'6s a miss. You might find a 12'6 that floats you and goes OK but in that class, unless you're an extraordinary athlete, you'll be waving goodbye to the jockeys and pilates-toned mums and racing yourself home.


*or a big unlimited if you can store one and there's a realistic race class for them where you live

Just want to offer a word of caution there...with 125 kg on board even a big volume "allrounder" can become a big handful in open water and/or choppy conditions...there's a helluva difference in how a board behaves with 80, 100 or 125kg standing on it. Volume distribution, hull shape and rail shape become a lot more critical in the cruiserweight class because our movements exert a lot more influence over a board than even a 100kg paddler (I speak from knowledge). Stating the obvious but the OP should try to demo as many as he can in the conditions he's likely to use them in - I just twigged that he's in the USA so DC & WoW aren't going to be options.

(all that said, itching to see that new fanatic up close)

That white DC17 (above) would be a great option (or similar).
Looks very nice too.
