as a card carrying sub 9' sup per, i was shocked when i saw a guy on a tiny surf ski yesterday at the alley. it looked about 5' and when i asked him, it was. now i had a 7'2 sb, but 5' something - is it possible without looking like a dodo's egg?

i had a go on the sb 7'11, but i found the nose way to big for my liking, all though others have loved it. i think the 7'2 was better. troy's boy won it on the supsa day, but i think troy has kidnapped for a bit. maybe we should build something like(hint hint troy). been getting waves at an average alley line up till today- n/easters. not sure how it's going to break when get some swell. there is a wave trying really hard off the rock, maybe that might start to fire up

I agree also.

How wide and short does a board get before all it does it tick tack and have no drive?

Boards don't need to be loose to turn, they need to go fast, with speed anything is possible. Speed allows you to use a rail, not just pivot. Pivoting is ugly.

I just don't see the sense in a race for the shortest board, the paddle used correctly on the wave with speed creates leverage to turn sharply using the rail. Call me old fashioned but if you go fast and turn hard burying your rail you make lots of spray, that for my money is what good surfing is all about.

i can see a purpose in a shorter narrower board- quicker turning, but very tuff to stay on.one thing is you are going to have to be super quick with paddle usage on a wave or you will one move behind all the time.

What about just paddling out on a 6'2 shortboard and taking a paddle with you? We have had boards like that for years.

Hey Lacie, the 7'2" starboard (muchly apprecated from yourself) surprisingly surfs well. More of a novelty, fun stick but not one to riding all the time. Need to really work it hard to produce the speed needed for bigger turns and manouvers but none the less.....very fun. Played around with different fin configurations and changes the whole performance sence of the board. However, it does lose the long drawn out turns you get from a bigger board and that sence of that true SUP feel. Does my son get to ride it? Hell no........mine all mine! Sub 6'......crazy mofo's!

ha,i'm pretty happy on my 8'8, does things i would be happy to have do on my shortie. cmc, been getting some tips of the oc local crew and very happy with the way my paddling is shaping up. wont go into it, but to say the bonus has been a marked improvement with my general surfing- a lot better balanced and usage of paddle. sorry to dogman and others that might have placed bets on when i get another sup, this ones sweet
cheers
ps regardless of what you and i might think, people will go and try shorter.when it's all said and done, shorter sup will be between 8' to 9'

Brooko,
You know it. Some where like the box, you need paddle speed. At the moment, I would not attempt anywhere with a board less than 8'8" long. You would need to be taj burrow to paddle into the box with a sup less than 7'6" foot. It aint going to happen.........

Spot on Scotty, the box of all places no ones going out there anytime soon guaran ted
GAs would be deadly enough, surfed that pace plenty of times on a shortboard and it would be one of the heaviest spots on earth at 6ft on a sub

here a video on a 5'11" in 1 foot weak waves (corsica). The guy is patrice Guenole, the Gong / Drops designer, weighting 104kg (230 lbs). He claims he feels more stable than his 125l 9'11" (but paddling speed is lower than a shortboard of the same size, so positioning for the take off is tricky, and this cannot be your main board)
This is the same guy in LSD message above.

General rule of thumb... longer boards will ride really smooth, and glide really well, and paddle faster with less maneuverability....

I personally can't see the point of going under 8 foot for an SUP for me. At that stage, I would just swap over to my regular short selections.

The waves in that video with the really short SUP.... looks like it would be more fun on a Fish standard surfboard anyway.

I agree. What's the point in stand up paddling if your going down to 6". Why don't u just ride a normal short board if that's the way you want to Sup.
