Hey Windy I'd call that mast high also but most surfers go by the Hawaiian method of measuring from the back of the wave (I don't know why) so it would be about 8'.

Great photo.Interesting topic wave measurement and ive never fully understood it but to me if that guy in a slight squat is five foot high then surely that wave is nearer twenty foot high from the riders feet to the peak.I just dont understand that back of the wave measurement.

I'd call that a 18' wave - it's at least three times the height of the rider - who is at the bottom of the wave - but then again I'm from Victoria and that wave looks way too scary for me with my limited surfing experience.

Why would you want to measure it from the back? Does that mean I've been surfing 10cm waves? Gee that doesn't sound impressive at all.

Oliver is about spot on there that the face of that wave is around 18 ft... making it an 8 - 10 ft wave ! I surfed a few waves this morning with at least 12- 15 ft faces making it a solid 5 - 6 ft beach break

Hey Brooko,

Where do you get the 18 foot wave face => 8 to 10 foot wave height ratio from? Never heard of it before. When people talk about 8 - 10 feet waves I always thought of it as a substantial wave - a fair bit larger than the height of the rider. The pictured wave face is triple the height of any rider I know.

I think most peeps think this wave is much bigger than your conservative estimates.

Agreed, wuduku (or mate) is on a decent wave, bigger then 6-8ft I reckon (even in Hawaiian terms).

Unless this reef is sucking way below sea level like Teauphoo

Then again, how can you quote a Hawaiian size to a wave without actually riding it/sitting out the back or seeing the rear of the wave in the shot? (not meaning to be in your face, just stating a idea)

Anyway a nice wave for any craft, good pic

As dj stated earlier , all waves in surfing terms are measured from the back of the wave , so if you you are sitting out the back and look at a wave from behind just before it throws over & breaks top to bottom that is the size called on set waves I also know most wave size calls from out west Margaret river way to east coast Aust is quite conservative , i have seen waves on the eastern seaboard the locals may call 6-8 ft that any local south west wa surfer would call 4-6 ! call it as you will, but you look a bit of a kook when your calling something 6ft that is really 3ft By the way the wave mentioned here is for sure around the 8 - 10 ft mark, wouldnt call it any bigger at all
