played around with the fins on a board of mine i wasn't that fussed on and just couldn't get it to go right. then i thought i give it go what tryfan has been on about. that is, big-ish side fins with a medium shortboard style fin as the centre. i kinda just wrote him off, playing around with so many fin setups he wouldn't know what was going on anymore. well, the board turned into something fast, drivey and still loose and that was in some pretty ordinary waves/conditions.
well worth trying if a boards not quite happening for you
cheers
ps never doubted you tryfan,

ive got shapers s9's with a sunny centre fin. from what i have done and from scotty says. the sides have to be big, almost like a small twin fin size. i think scotty uses a medium sb fin as a centre. the ti's from futures are good too. it suits my as i really like to give it a bit and the smaller side fins on a normal 2 plus one/thruster don't hold and big all round fins seems to kill the board

After chatting with Scotty many times about about my fin fetishes, I tried his suggestion of the Shapers Dave Parkes twin fins on the front of my 8'10 Quad and little Dick Van Strallens 3.5'' at the rear.

Surfed the Greenmount area last Friday/Sat and the board went awesome.Board still had plenty of speed and turned really sharp which was pleasantly suprising. Even hung in on the more sucky takeoffs when I thought it would let go.

Definately keeps the stoke alive and heaps cheaper than a new board

I've got big FCS (old black plastic 5As - I think) and a Shapers 5 1/4 in the back-basically a short board set up (just bigger sizes than I normally ride for a bigger board).

So sounds pretty similar.

I've tried MR twins in the sides and didn't like it at all.

yeah, the mr's are a bit over the top. they are probably the biggest twinnie fin around. have a go with a slightly smaller centre fin using an adapator- see what you reckon

FCS also sells a fin box converter so that if you have a board with a box you can use any FCS fin to check out what fin works best for you in the center

I was speaking to Scotty today also about this set up, I use MRTFX in the sides and a slightly taller fin in the center. This works well for me, when the swell backs off a bit I might give this set up a go.

We actually have waves here at the moment, must be Gromfest time so that those poor little under 12's have to surf solid waves like every other year down at Lennox.

Not over the top if you like a board with a lot of drive and hold. I love 'em.

Ah, same for me. I liked the drive of some old the MR Twins carbon but felt they slowed the board too much. By sanding them for a rough surface, and slightly rounding the inside leading edge to get rid of the sharp edge which is bad hydrodynamically, they worked much better. However, the FCS plug system is not strong enough IMO for these fin size. One broke at the first windsup attempt. I have since put the same size fins but in native minituttle format (I used FCS/minituttle adapters for the MRs)
