it struck me i haven't posted anything since.

i must have run out of stupid inarticulate ideas or i'm chicken or i haven't brought a new board or all of the above

hang on, i did post that brilliant 'classic fin' piece.

well, im interested in getting a 'rockered 14' er for the big funky( as jacko puts it) down runs sometime in the future

there's the sic, the switchblade, the new glide and dc reckons he's keen on doing a ' rockered board'.

anyone else interested in this type of board?

any comments on these boards or something i've missed would be 'grouse'

the low rockered boards are fine for most aussie conditions, just looking for something for those odd days

The F16 is one of the most rocketed DW boards out there and Jonathan's 14' Starboard Open Ocean board has a very similar bottom shape/rocker.. but it's disguised by the big fat top shape.. but it does seem to work very well.

Hey I dont like mac either - but getting a bit sick and tired of hearing the same old lame softcrock label "grumpy old mal rider" - seems to me the biggest bunch of grumpy, whiney sooks are ex shortboarders who are now sup'ers cos they are too old/fat or scared to ride their shortys and too pig headed to ride a longboard. Give it a rest - longboarders are the history of surfing and the true soulful heart of it so have some respect for the equipment that gave us stand up paddle boards in the first place - LONGBOARDS.

Hi Lacey,

DJ is spot on, the Starbie Open Ocean 14 (the latest 2011 model) actually has quite a lot of rocker and is remarkably similar to the F16 in the front third of the board. Don't know why but I find the OO to be a bit easier to get onto a wave though, maybe because the steering on the F16 stops me getting forward far enough. That first foot of persian slipper on the F16 doesn't really do much in my experience - if that's under you are pretty much in trouble anyway, the extra volume in the nose of the OO seems to pull the nose back up just as effectively. Admittedly if you do go in really deep on the OO it does slow the board down but now I'm used to the board that just doesn't seem to happen any more.

Both the F16 and the OO14 are very friendly when you are on the wave, both surf well and feel super stable and fun when you get back on them.

I sold my F16V2 on Maui and had ordered a V3, which is similar but made on Maui, full carbon, about an inch narrower, stiffer and lighter but in the end I cancelled that order and I'm just going to go for a OO 14 over there. For some reason I'm a bit over the steering thing and have been really enjoying the simplicity of a 14 that surfs well so you can make ground up on the wave - probably going to eat my words 10 miles from Molokai next year.....

IMO more rocker is the way to go if it's windy enough, just so much more fun.

Hey JohnathanC,

I know a bloke who entered the recent Molokai as a team. He had a custom board made up prior with less rocker. He mentioned before the race that this was the design to go with (less rocker). When he came back he regrets not having more rocker for sure.

only Lacey can answer those questions I got the impression he was trying something new with LK after having a good run with DC. He has mentioned more than once good things regarding DC since going to LK, and with only good things to say about LK also.....

what does brand matter...really??? seems alot aline themselves in one brand camp or another and feeling a need to defend it like a blood line. Unless your talkiing about the cheap chinese crap boards they are all good, production and custom. As long as it meets the needs of the onwer (makes them feel warm and fuzzy) thats what counts....

Hahahaha, just surf lads and stop carrying on about who invented what sport as you might be suprised.

Lacey, I hear Coreban has a new 14' downwinder coming based on the rocker of the 12'6 Alpha. Look up 14' Dart Coreban and see what you can find. Otherwise I think nothing will ever beat a custom no matter what company or shaper you purchase from.

ok, i've done runs in big ish conditions on dc and lk. the boards will handle it and to be honest 85% of the time both these brands are the go.

i feel in bigger conditions i could have more fun witk a rockered boards instead of darting back to the tail all the time.
while both boards are designed for the nose to go under and come up clean, its not something i like at high speed linking runners.

i don't go with the theory we never get big conditions. flounder and myself did a run just before that last swell got big. i was thinking at the time i couldn't imagine anywhere being much better and a reknown paddler said it did look a bit like maliko, even downwinder reckons at times it can be on.

i'm looking for that rockered board and this time i intend to demo boards in reasonable conditions to find the one i like

cheers

Photo journalism I like that, DJ has that down pat

I am not a big fan of the nose digging in; feels better on a rockered board IMO. But I my be slower. Have an older style DC16 goes really well. Would like to try a SIC F16 that shape looks really sweet.
