As far as punching out through a big swell smaller the better , a big board will give you more speed when you're up and running but if you are getting munched in the break it's quicker to recover and get paddling again on a shorter board even if you are just laying down.

It's a big trade off to go to bigger just to paddle out , keep it short and narrow as you can for the best surfing performance in meaty surf.

For your size and weight 9-6 would be a boat for you unless it was and absolute pin pin thin gun.

That board looks quite nice, might be a bit over buoyant for Lacey though. Why don't you get Dale to make you a gun Lacey? Something about 9'2" x 27 1/2 with a pulled in tail and a bit more rocker.

I don't reckon you have to go too short unless you are riding big bombie type waves. My little 8'9" has been fine in double overhead stuff down here, admittedly we don't get the currents you get on the goldy.

I would seriously think about PU for a real gun.

EPS has always skittered in wind and bump, if your gonna take it on go PU. You will never see a prone gun made from EPS for this exact reason. A few guys took Surftech guns (same const as most SUP) to Indo a few years back and the results were scary. Wouldnt want to be held up in the lip of a 10' wave. Surftechs sell fishes etc pretty much for small waves 99%.

On the C4 website there are a lot of PU's also, I guess for heavier waves in Hawaii.

I reckon Dale could make a fantastic PU gun, Burfords sell the foam. Glass in Epoxy or PE.

Yes, I will also have a chat with Dale about this as I think you have to take the right board out in solid waves. He made me a really nice 9'2" quad paddle in board(actually he made it for himself and I claimed it) but I left it Hawaii. It went really well in last years solid swells (also at sunset) so he knows what he is doing. I think he could put together something really good.

The boys charging Dungeons are using lead weights in their boards so weight is something that you would be looking for in really solid waves.

What SEASON are you referring to Lacey, didn't the Gold Coast just cop a swell?
or are you heading overseas?if so how big do you intend to go out in?

just the wave season in east coast.i had a surf this morning at the alley, 3 to 4 ft, saw cmc out there. had some issues holding lines i like to surf, but still got some good ones. this afternoon tried the shapers s9. made the board a dog to handle, kept bogging. while it had a better hold, the board lacked finesse. my feelings are it is the outline and the width at 29'. don't get me wrong- i love my board to bits, just been so long without waves this the first time in a bit bigger stuff.goatie, i'll check out the new rippers and have a chat to dale too. last year i had the gerry 8'11 and had a ball in bigger waves with that. i did convert it from a quad to 3 finner. seems to be the hot topic at the moment- a bigger board that still rips
