DJ is right. Occasionally you can trick a downwinding board into thinking that a wave is a runner but there is no way he is going to trick that board he's on a runner.

I beg to differ guys.....a few of us surf prk with 12'6 to 20' flat water race/cruise boards on waves very similar to the shot.
The take off angle is just "modified" to suit the drop, & some of the boards riden on waves you would think could never surf a wave....zero rocker, nose & tail with narrow displacement tails.
The trick is to ride the tail, that keeps the nose well in the air.....even you could do it Oliver!

up on the goldie we have to go out and back in through waves. it's tricky. sometimes coming works if get you back over the rudder, other times i just jump of if i don't like the way it's shaping up. the boards are too dear to be burying the nose in the sand.most of our lot have a tail pad over the rudder area
cheers
ps dale surfs them in all the time with a touch of class

I was surfing waves similar to the photo on a Naish 14 at Wategos a couple of weeks back. I forgot my paddle with me and decided to use the Naish like a Mal. You just stand over the fins, lift the nose, slightly stall, bend the knees pick your line and your away. No problem. I wouldn't be recommending doing this in a crowded line up...but if there's a few off shore reef breaks with abit of deep water, the 14 plus will will handle the drop and speed easily.... as long as you eliminate the bottom turn!

I was gonna say the same thing but didnt want to sound like a 'no-it-all', after all, what do I know? Ive only ever done 2 Doctor races, 1 Whalebone and a handleful of short downwinders
There are plenty of more experience downwinderers on this forum than me.
I SUP surfed with Eric plenty of times and know he rips
Looking at that photo I reckon he could have pulled that off

Unfortunately not everyone can pull this off. A word of caution be careful because I had a 14 foot SIC snap in half on a 6 foot hawaiian wave and I was not riding it. My friend borrowed my board for a race and when he got to the bottom of the wave a smap happened and front 4 feet gone with the back buckling.

ouch! one thing i look at then i go for a dw is wave size and try to work it a dw run in to higher tide finish if there is some size. i find it hard to go from a runner stance into a surfing mode when coming in. the legs sorta feel locked in, where as if you are just surfing downwind boards in small stuff it seems easier
cheers

There's no doubt that some have the skills.. and the luck.. to pull it off.

But get it wrong (like Byron says) and it will be nasty for sure..

Looking closely at the photo I think Eric's board is heaps smarter than the broken board pictured above.

Whenever, I've managed to trick my board into thinking that a wave was a runner I've had tons of fun, but then again I've only surfed big fat bumps that look like runners on my d/w board.

Dj thanks for the visual...That was valentine's day and when I got the call was all sick. They said on the phone it might be repairable but they needed to find the nose...lol.. Check the buckle in the back. My mind says after the drop back foot had a lot of pressure so maybe angle at bottom was straight. Who knows at least no one was hurt.
