Great vid Dogman - thanks for posting. He really is insane. I especially liked his wide stance there to control his board on that first wave. Hats off!!!!!

The only way to finish a wave like that, nothing else to do but ride in deep.

Thats insane dogman
Lairds waves were good, but the other guys OMG! he is a friend of my dads his name is Terry Chun he pretty much rules the bay whatever he is on, that was the most committed SUP barrel i have seen yet, including the ones in Tahiti, and if you have ever surfed Hanalaei Bay you know that you get seriously whipped out there if you get flogged on any board let alone a paddle board! wave has so much power, right on Terry!!!
Lairs a legend too though no doubt about that.

Gnarly looking wave that one!

I think he has the lease attached to his waist to keep it out of the way - I presume it comes off his waist fairly easily, then the main force is on his ankle.

I'd seen a few guys recently tuck the leggy into their shorts like that to stop the 'drag' whilst paddling. As soon as they get into waves where the water is moving quicker it simply pulls out as normal.

West coast Victoria recently aswell, there were longboarders doing the same thing. Admittedly they had the leggies at their knee aswell and it was to stop the leggy tangling round the fin/tail of the board, as soon as they jumped up the leggy would drop outta their dacks.

Hanalaei Bay is that on Kauai ? I surfed a wave that looked similar to Hanalaei Bay, Lagundi Bay Nias way back in 1983 riding a 6'8'' single fin you could drive a truck through the tube it was that round got some bulls##t stand up barrels I nearly died that day by 3 set wave hold down one more second & I would not be hear today. Check out the second photo it was a solid 12ft day, look closely you can see a head to the left just paddling over the lip thats me. & F##k I used to smoke a packet of Windfield Reds a day back then

Gee that brings back memories.
Spent 5 weeks at Nias early 90s with my then girlfriend.
Turmoil in and out of the water but I can't complain overall.
Guys all round us getting Malaria.
Longest hold down of my life and acutally hit the bottom- and out there it was deep.

Made the elevator drop but was too late to pull in to the safety of the barrel.
Got rolled in front of what was a close to triple overhead set top to bottom round after being blasted forward by the lip. When I finally broke the surface and was sent deep it was a relief. Had my eyes open but it was dark so started back for the surface . Three more thrashings and it was still dark.I also think I was seconds away from peace. Usual story once surfaced. Rest of the set on the head . Nothing was as bad as the first after that though.
Dodged the malaria but blew out my eardrum a few days later on a smaller day- funny how that happens.
Went to the local town doctor and he suggested I blow cigarette smoke out of it to make sure it was perforated. I had already had to make my way in, totally dizzy in the water and it flapped when I held my nose and blew so I knew already but didn't go in for the local diagnosis technique.
Some of the best tube time of my life however so maybe thats just the price.
At least I can't hear the kind words from old longboarders feeling their advantage challenged when I am 50 metres away on my sup taking a fat peak by myself that no one else could get onto anyway.

thats a classic picture of you Phil, looks like you boys were havin a blast. makes we wanna go check that part of the world out, minus the Malaria of course!
Legion:
I dont know about SUP being banned out at Hanalaei now but i can confirm that it wasnt banned out at the bay in January when i left, there were always at least 2-3 sup out there, few people didnt seem to like it that much but most were friendly.
I dont really think anyone could ban either of those two from SUP out at the bay, Both Terry and Laird are legends over there.
