just wondering if you'v seen a big increase in SUP in your town.
i went into the local Ripcurl shop this morning for a leggie and saw this guy walking out with a paddle which looked funny as the shop doesn't sell SUP's and only sells a doz or so short and long boards.
i said to the shop assistant did you sell that paddle to that guy and she said yes we got five boards and paddles in this week and we sold out in four days.for a small shop i thought that was big.
we dont live on the goldie or sunny coast and this kind of sale would probably be small for them.
i then went for a coffee and just noticed lots of SUP's getting around, have you noticed an increase in SUP's

I have noticed a few changes Wiery.
The most obvious thing is that the crew that kicked off around Coolum and Noosa about 6 to 8 years ago has really diminished.
There are still a few around but no where near the number there was.
The biggest change is the number of women doing still water paddling in the river and bays around Noosa. This seems to be an exercise and social thing for a lot of them. Good for the boys as well.
The other change i've noticed is a big increase in race boards and competitive guys in the Cotton Tree and Maroochydore area.
They train of an afternoon regularly and seem pretty intense. They are generally reasonably young so will probably get over it.

Definitely in Sydney!!!!
On the northern beaches its gone crazy. Like windsurfing was 25 years ago, now you see boards on so many cars and the beaches and lake are full of them. Great to see.

Went for a Surf at "bay surf" at the entry to port hacking this morn

and when we got there prob about 8-10 sups , 2 goat boaters, and a couple of skis and outriggers, by 830, 22 odd SUP's and that was it.

Every one was super friendly with heaps of encouragement and ribbing going and plenty of wave sharing no hassles at all.
Even saw one guy break his paddle and someone else gave him theirs as they were heading home.
met "Yowiesup" from seabreeze there too.

Yep, dead right weiry.

Noticeable increase in Ulla (3 hours south of Sydney). I expect more as people realise how good it is; ie, wave count up 3000%!!!

Nice to have met you Air80. You too have caught the obsession with SUP! That was Shiresup that broke his paddle. Great spot for a wave especially as some were giving 1 minute rides. Hard not to smile when on them....

Gotta watch out for the outriggers...they are like freight trains

I am going to try and post a quick vid of yesterday but have had some technical probs--blackscreen. If it doesnt work below will try again down the track

Isn't that Cardiff Reef area? Sure were a lot of SUPs when I visited. The marine layer fog... the tiny, but fun waves. There were bigger days. But that area sure had heaps of SUPs. That number just wouldn't be right at Maroubra. Maroubra has had some growth in SUP numbers... make things a bit tense at times since it's already such a crowded beach.

I started late last year and I have noticed from late Winter every weekend there are more guys riding SUPs on each break at Cronulla. General vibe with surfers ok, but waait and see what happens Summer. As expected midweek quieter. There at least is alot of beach to paddle along down here, and of course the Baysurf. The local SUP shops always seems busy on a weekend with new purchases. Regards yowiesup

I thought the question was:
"just wondering if you've seen a big increase in SUP in your town. "

If the question was:
Do you have any great pictures of waves in your town?
Then I would have posted this picture, shot at the exact same spot

My "Zombie's" may not look like much .... but they are reliable.

Sunday, right in the middle of our break, a Great White launched out of the water with a seal in it's mouth. Two more bites and it was gone, leaving only a huge pool of blood that some surfers ended up paddling through. The beach was closed for 1 hour, then everyone went back in.

I took a picture of the same break at 7:30 am the next day, before going out. It was business as usual in Zombieland

By tagging, they have identified Lots of GW's in our waters, but data shows that 5 BIG ones have staked out territories.
"Large Marge" is boss in the immediate area around our peak. She is 5.2 meters - 1,600 kg. I'm guessing it was her that took the seal.

check out this short "Shark Week" promo video of "Large Marge"

That could be one of the flattest waves I've ever seen a picture of.

Large Marge might be large, but she's obviously a showoff too. Ours just quietly go about getting on with business, unfortunately.
