we tried one of these fins in my 14 'after mounting a ss rod in the fin

the fin felt more stable, no apparent lose of speed, paddled a lot straighter and turned really well when using the rudder. it wasn't until we put the other rudder back in did we realize how much more stability it offered. i'm impressed. has anyone else tried them/
cheers

How much are the fins Lacey? They look good - regardless of exactly how long they are!

Just make sure you step off in waist deep water to prevent fin damage.. Now that would be a pain in the butt.

I don't see the sense in using a fin like that.. unless you're on the plane and want to go upwind..

Someone explained to me that as the board rocks from side to side, the bigger fins (and bigger fin tips) help resist this rock. Made sense to me - see amateur diagram

But a big fin will increase drag a little, but if it helps you go straighter, perhaps the added drag is worth it.

Has anyone used the True Ames Shallow Water Touring (SWT) Fin ?? Overall fin area should help you stay on course; but it has less depth.... and it is suggested that increased fin depth may reduce the 'side to side rock'..... comments.... ??? ....

dj, it sure looks over the top. my 14' is a speed and runner machine, but tippy. i'm looking to reduce the side rock and it reduces that factor.yeah a beach start and finish wouldn't be good in a race
simondo,i was really expecting to go slower, but it is quite narrow so maybe that lessens the drag i have considered that type of setup(your photo), but i thing maybe that i might straighten the board up, but not sure about the reduction of side rocking
ps also, to convert that to a rudder, i think would be hard and you would have a lot of rudder turning in front of the shaft axis

Year, Shallow Water Tourer would be too hard to convert as rudder !

The stability issue is interesting. Im not sure if depth is the key but surface area.

I find my odd looking Triangle weed fin (about 6 inch depth) to be more stable than my 11 inch fin. It also provides a heap more directional tracking as well.

i had distance paddle today and i like to go to the creek mouth and get a few just to get some sea legs after a flatwater paddle. the board at 26.5" with chimes that reduce the bottom flat standing surface width to a bit under 20" behaved a lot better for sure.j
those skeggy or raking fins would probably do the same job i suppose, but the directional tracking wouldn't be good in a downwinder in imo. the boards need to able to turn and get knocked around a bit.
cheers
