I know very little about board design and what makes a flat water specific board as opposed to an open ocean board. What are the features that make a board flat water specific as opposed to an open ocean race board?

generally you would be narrower in overall width, narrower tail and nose, flatter or no rocker. more often than not a piercing nose and most likely its going to be a lot less stable than your average board

So are bop style boards generally flat water boards? In the 12'6" class what are the main flat water boards and what would be the main open ocean boards currently available?

bop boards are interesting. they have the flatwater rockers, mostly displacement nose. widths can very.the difference to an out and out flatwater racer say like the starboard ace model is bop boards usually have a square tail for some handling and surfing abilities.

the ace is a full fw racer. the old jav was another. best popular bop boards around here- dc, fanatic, lahui kai and a few sic's and deep's. not many jm's, naish,c4 or starboards around, but that could change

I'm thinking about dropping down to a 12'6" board so this is very helpful, thank you.

A female friend has asked if I could make her a flat water board similar to the 12.6 bop boards but only 9 ft long. She has no intention of ever going out into the ocean and wants something that is easy to get on the roof of her car. Is there anything on the market like that.

Same problem for my wife and some friends of her
I went to make a 11', then a 10'6. They love it
Dale sent the 10'6 to japan and they love it as well
I think going shorter will make it difficult to keep any good glide feeling.

Rachel is tiny and she bought the 12'6" Cat and found it a perfect race board for a small person.

Probably not, don't get real flat water all that often at my local haunts. Next purchase will probably be a 12'6 BOP style to round out my quiver.

I'll be able to tell you how fast the Stingray is after next weekend. Stu has offered me one of these boards to paddle for the Hawkesbury classic, so after 111km should have a decent feel of the board, hopefully in nothing but flat glassy conditions but I'll accept a 10-15knt tail wind.

Awesome! Good luck. I know how much your body can hurt after that sort of distance, so i wouldn't trade spots with u next weekend.
Wishing you well for the paddle.

111km? I wouldn't be thinking of speed. I'd be wanting comfort. Can you fit a deck chair on one of those Suploves?
