29 THEELEN FRANCK 1 34 15
30 POUGET PASCAL 1 35 50 12’6

I only know wich board brand the 4 first were using
Each category started 1’30” apart, unlimited going 1st then 14’ then 12’6”
A bit of a pity because it would have been interesting to see if rico and eric could have stayed close to chuck had they been together from the start
Amazing performance from Eric Terrien on a 12’6. He is from canary island and for those who are not into winter sport, Nidecker is a Swiss brand manufacturing snowboards. Eric is the one developing the SUP for them apparently they are not too bad.....
And thanks to Rico to come after wining the surf tandem comp part of the world tour on saturday 600km from there in the basque country, driving at night getting here at 6am and then sleeping in his car before the midday start!

Imagine if chuck had not been here on a 17’ it would be hard to explain why buying a long SUP, the 2nd unlimited comes more than 5 minutes behind eric, rico and kurt!!
It’s all about the engine....

Apparently the week end was fantastic and the organisation perfect. It will be on next year again, if anybody is in europe it’s worth getting there.
It’s ½ hour from Cannes and just after the movie festival so you if you have a gopro movie of yourself you might even want to send it to the jury

here is the start of saturday's short distance with eric terrien (nidecker 12'6) in front of chuck patterson (hobie 14')

We really need to stop listing the results of any races in this way.

If it is listed like this there needs to be a class results list above or below it. Why compare a 12'6 to someone on a 17'??

I was talking to a certain other Seabreeze contributor the other day and how every race the results say oh so and so won the race. He was in a single class and first over the line.

Women, people on smaller boards etc etc come later and win the class but get no recognition of their effort or win which may be actually greater than the line honours winner from a seperate class. If that said winner was in the same class (17') he may have lost to the guy on the 12'6 but gets all the credit.

Thoughts anyone??

hey CNC

As someone in the market for a distance paddle board, i find the results very interesting. to you get my frame of mind concidering i have limited experience with distance paddle boards i see Unlimited class as F1 cars, 14' as Porshe cup racing and 12'6" as V8's.Feel free to correct me if im wrong.

Now in looking at these results, give or take who's on board 2nd, 3rd, and 4th have done very, very well compaired to the big boys handicap in place or not.

Or have i completly miss read the results.

If im right these results leave me even more confused about witch board i would have most fun and competivness on, or in other terms punch for pound out of a day on the water.

P.s. Surfing my 9'3" is a far less a head spin.

a 17' ocean board is probably not going to be as fast as a say flatwater 14'. this morning two well know paddlers were on 12'6, one was a surfboard type, guess what- if they weren't in front they were close to it. at some stage in flatwater, lenght, the hauling of that lenght and weight factor in. in the ocean i think would be a different matter
cheers
ps it's an honor to sometimes train with all the top paddlers on the goldie- thanks

I agree, for the guy on the 12'6 to come second and guys in 3rd. 4th etc on bigger boards that doesnt really mean that the best board for you is a 12'6 as it appears almost as quick as a 17'. The board isnt, the paddler was. If this guy is that close to Chuck on a 12'6 IMO he probably would have beat him on a 17' or any bigger board. He also won the 12'6 class, this list gives Chuck the credit. See what I mean?

My point was that all we seem to recognise is the first few people over the line. People in other classes have also done exceptionally well but receive no credit. The womens winner 12'6 example may be 15th over the line in total. Does anyone give her credit? No she came 15th. But she actually won.

For your distance / race board you just need to consider what kind of distances and what kind of conditions you would be paddling in. Ie Flat water get displacement, flat rocker style for distance. Ocean paddles over distance, something long with a rudder.

It's no different in any other sport Triatholns , Marathons , Coolangatta Gold , Molokai ect ect.....Plus there are going to be races where a 14 will beat a 17 especially here in Aus where our courses often run into and cross wind during the races.

I totally agree CMC and a classic example will be at the excel race coming up... womens division is just unlimited due to numbers.. some of us girls will have 12'6,14,and 17ft boards... all competiting in the one division..

It will be interesting as the sports develop as to how the classes will be seperated...if at all?

I would have thought the classes would stick with 12'6, 14 and unlim - easy, simple and already in place.

As for not breaking results out into classes/divisions/mens & womens the only reasons I can think of are poor software or lazyness. Having said that if your racing smaller fields than it might not be worth breaking it up because you might have a devision with 1 craft in it. The first race I ever did in a Byte (sailing dingy) I got 3rd - there where only 3 boats kinda takes the shine off it.

When are the SUP race Ausie titles? I'm sure we could fix all these issues before then.

Crazy fast paddling. The winner was doing around 11.5km/h if it was as they say a 14km race.

Does the guy on the right with red shorts and white vest have a spare paddle? Or is it some sort of steering device?

What about our closest relation in paddling sport? Outrigging. You may have the start time at the same moment but in reality there are 10 races happening at once.

Open men are not racing master men or senior master. They will be jostling on the course and pacing from each other but in the end seperate medals at the presentation and credit awarded as such. And the Coolangatta Gold had mens and womens winners. Triathlons also have age groups don't they?

Your example of the 14 vs the 17 proves my point in a way. If the course and conditions are better suited to the 14 (stock) rather than 17 (open) should the guys who completed on 17's against each other receive no recognition of the winner of the category because a 14' stock board beat them over the line??

Yeah that was my point they all raced together and the class wins are sorted out later , there is only one line honour , I'm assuming it's the same in the French race as they have specifically specified the classes and they were all started separately .Alain has just posted overall finish times. The photo of the mass start is the short course race.

If they were all competing against each other they would have started together in the long course. Alain can you confirm this ?

Looks like a spare paddle for sure Crash. Maybe just a backup for breakage or could be a different size blade if fatigue sets in to make coming home easier.

In fact on the website they did put the overall result (pink letters for the girls)and the result for each category men women per boardsize so I think it's pretty good
I just copied the overall but you can check there
www.lacigalesurfclub.com/sup-race-cup-2010.php

Rob you got it right the mass start was the 7km race of saturday and the 14km race of sunday was starting each category 1min 30sec apart

Regarding the spare paddle of chuck patterson I think that somebody at the star lost his paddle and it fell on his board.

Have a look at the prize money on the pics

Eric is a good paddler, i paddled againts him in Germany last year and he paddes hard so well done!!!

They must have some wind or tide assitance for the 14km race going by the times? as 7km took 49mins and 14 took 1:13

Why do they need legropes in flat water??

The front of that board looks pretty interesting too. It caught my eye straight away. Any better pics of it?

I must say that there are some really nice looking boards in that bunch.

For some reason this board looks very similar to the board that French guy on here was building. He posted on here about 4-6 months ago asking for design ideas with photos of the build process.

I remember thinking the front of the board looked very similar to that board. Will try and dig it up.
