Only to the Starboard 12'6" and 12' PSH.

The new 12'6" Starboard Pin looks very good (from what I've seen in pics)

There is a new 12' 7S Uber Cruz board coming that might be good.

There's not much else to compare. (here)

What do you want it for firstpoint? Racing, cruising, down-winders, waves. I've got a three year old pretty beat up Starboard 12'6 and it still surprises me how good it is as an all rounder.

as you know i gotta buy two,(annie as well)and two penetrators might cost a wee bit too much, could pick up a couple of second hand dc 12.6(mostly club race stuff but cruizing and race)the 2010 naish look ok but havent seen them yet and as you know i love aussie customs but in this case i am flexible but i am leaning toward dc 12.6.

i have been on 16's and 17's dc's, then had a paddle on dales own 12'6", the last one he has made. i was impressed. paddled with 2 17's. when they put the foot down i couldn't stay with them, but cruising,i could without blowing up. dale has some good stuff coming- newer designs

If you are looking for a race board then the Laguna Bay Penetrator 12.6 is pretty much unbeatable, especially in offshore conditions. IMO they are the best 12.6 race board in aus' at the moment.
If it is an allround 12.6 board you are after then its hard to go past the starboard 12.6 - they are great in flat water and smaller surf and pretty quick in open water as well.

All right this is my take on all the boards and i have riddin most (not ALL)

I'm sure you don't mean to surf on.

12 glide Naish: Great all rounder not the fastest flat water board and pushes a bit of water, Great In down wind runs and picks up runners with ease if you put the hard strokes in. Might not win all races but could be up there with the right paddler on it.

SB 12'6: Good flat water board not the fastest i have paddled but nice and stable bit of a middle of the pack board. no good for down wind runs.

DC 12'6: Good down wind bit quicker than the Glide average in the flat. Being custom and made light they are a bit faragie and if you ding it make sure you fix it straight away!!!!!

12'6 Pen: Have not riddin it so wont say to much but from race results would say similar to DC

Tested a new local 12'6 to today and was the fastest one i have been on and it will be available on the day of my demo was good to very good in the flat might struggle in the down winders but it is made mostly for flattish conditions.

I'm try to have a few race boards at our demo so if you get a chance come and try them out.

One last thing is durability and some might disagree but boards like the glide and SB i feel have it on the others when it comes to all round toughness they are boards that you would have no problem putting kids on the front or your dog and not worrying about putting a hole in your board.its always things to consider when getting boards are things like that. Some time the fastest might not be the best for what you need. write down what you want in a board and then list them from most important to least and find something that fits what you are looking for the most.

Hey paul.j have to disagree about the 12'6 Starboard being no good for down-winders. I have a 14 Penetrator and the 12'6 Starie, over 30 knots the Starboard is awesome, catches long long runners, handles side chop and lumps on the wave face well and gives you stability to actually stay on when the sea state is really wild. The softer rails make it much better in less than ideal waves than the Glide and it is very close in speed. Have to admit a little more nose rocker would be nice!

18 months ago the guys at HiTech on Maui said it was virtually the default board for people doing down-winders that just wanted a regular production board.

Certainly agree about the toughness of the production gear too.
I don't think there is an "ideal" board, certain boards suit certain wind and wave conditions - local knowledge is absolutely crucial.

IMO the 12'6" Starboard is faster than the 11'6" Naish.. but not as fast as the 12' Naish (Glide).

The 12'6" Starie glides along on small runners maybe better than the 12' Glide but doesn't get up and boogie on real runners like the 12' Glide..

I can't wait to see DC's 12'6" boards at the OGDC day.

The 12.6 Penetrator and the 12.6 DC could not be more different and they cannot be compared other than by trying both boards. they have different stability characteristics and paddle very differently in flatwater and offshore conditions and the only thing they have in common is that they are both very quick boards for their size.

This is the SB board i'm talking about
http://www.star-board-sup.com/products/bd_thepin.php

It might go aallrriigghhtt in choppy stuff but get that thing in the ocean on a good down winder and you'll get smoked for sure. There are certain things that make a down wind board that make it a down wind board and that board is missing some of the key things. Flat and chop fine ocean down wind no way!!!

Got you! Agree, that would be a scary ride in true down-winder. The Starboard I'm talking about is the 12'6 Cruiser

Surprisingly capable on down-winders.

I'm going on what i have seen. Malfunction race, two very good paddlers one on DC and one on Pen they were even all the way, boards very similar pretty sure construction is nearly the same. Sure the shape is different but results say the same to me i have not seen one of them stand out from the other. I would say average speed on both fronts not super fast. Its only early days and we have not seen fast yet!! I'm sure if you brought either board you would be happy, but is there faster boards YES!!! Not sure on the price of these boards at full RRP from what i have heard i think the pen is more ,could be wrong? If you talk about stability then from what i have felt from ridding round bottom boards and DC's then i would say DC is more stable sure the pen might not tip all the way over but tipping from side to side until the secondary stable point kicks in is enough to throw most average paddlers off. Got to agree with this assessment. Have paddled some long downwinders on the 12'6 SB and its almost as fast and certainly more forgiving than the Glide. Itr was in PP Bay but still got some decent swells

yes i was looking at some thing different, But my comment still stands.Good down wind board if you think its good that sweet but thats not going to get real runners. Not enough foam in the tail to start with. I used to think my 11'6 naish was so fast oh how wrong i was. Please try out DJ's 14 when he gets it and then come back to this topic and tell me what you think. Its funny how views change so fast in this sport and mine have changed so much from when i started its not funny.

Hard to call what's the 'best' 12'6" - up to the individual rider and what they are after in a 12'6" and their size etc etc etc. Many variables.

The JL Albatross 12'6 is another one in the mix.

Here's one in action at "The Doctor" earlier this year.

Cheers,

Courts

Looking forward to trying DJ's 14 that's for sure. The 12'6 Cruiser and the 11'6 Naish are chalk and cheese, the Naish has nothing like the speed of the Starboard Cruiser. DJ and I had one of our best ever down-winders today, speed of the Naish Glide 12 and the Starboard Cruiser were virtually identical over 10k.

It certainly felt like I was getting real runners today, actually even planing over the wave in front then even once over the one in front of that! Might be a good idea to state it as an opinion rather than a fact paul.j.

Aside from that, there are certainly some great developments going on right now - exciting time for the sport.

I think the runners we get in the bay are quite different from the ones you see in the videos in the ocean - the waves seem much steeper and closer together in the bay. Stability seems to me to be an important factor in the bay, if you are falling off you will lose ground very quickly. It will be interesting to see how the thinner 14' glide performs there.
