Here's a promo vid for a great SUP spot in Thailand for fat old guys. Yes, I have been there and I found it one of the most confronting places I have ever been. Only seconded by Manila. Watch this and laugh.

Would be nice if it was semi for sure going to be waves but sounds a bit fickle ?

Starting to think, why would a full time worker who lives down the coast, take leave from work for a couple of weeks ,to go over seas, and spend a fooking fortune on the off chance of getting some old fat guy waves. And walk around in the [on the ] heat going from bar to bar.

maybe I would be better off doing a road trip up nth and sleeping in the back of the wagon ,just like the goodol days.

fuel and cans of baked beans , to get out of the comming Vic winter, when it gets really cold !!!

maybe i,m just a tightass...? well i know i am!!! just carnt justify spending craploads of cash on airfairs and accomodation for two weeks of beer and possibly surfuping.

hey if i choose not to go ,Julia Gillard may give me a big tax break for not flying in a jet aircraft, may trade my carbon paddle for a foresty pine version also hahahaha

Hey Sands, you wouldn't go to Thailand for a sup surfing holiday that's for sure! Went to Phuket with the misses a couple of years ago for a wedding anniversary and had a ball. Certainly would not go there for surf however.

If you are after the cultural experience Vietnam is a better bet IMO - once again no surf really. Lots of better spots for surf that's for sure.

SandS - I don't think that you will be happy if you are just going to Thailand for a SUP'ing holiday unless you are prepared to do spend all of it on flat water and checking out the limestone caves. Don't get me wrong parts of Thailand are spectacular but when I went I did the whole country in 21 days. Depending on your accommodation the place is dirt cheap. I also did Vietnam last year and again if you are chasing the waves not somewhere I would recommend.

If you aren't sure what to do, then why not pack up the car and head off up or down the coast and just move around when you want to.

I spent 12 months in a tent, 4wd and a tinny travelling around Oz and loved it. We have so many special spots here in Oz to visit it is incredible.

If you are keen on having a new culture and fat old bloke surf. Maybe some of the softer Bali waves and Gurupuk on Lombok. Don't know how it would go down with all the surfers there tho. If you do go to Gurupuk let me know as I think it would be a fantastic SUP wave ... crowd permitting
