Interesting tail shape, do you think it would work?

I think it's a bit of a gimmick and not really necessary.. but they do 'sort of' work.

I've used a few different step-tail prototype boards for windsurfing and the concept is more for slalom and speed rather than wave riding (I think) but I did ride one flexy tail board that was for waves that was also a step-tail and that seemed to work well.

The idea has been around for yonks.. and I'm not a big fan.

BTW.. That hand hole position in the pic seems way off?... but looks like it might be a nice board tho... Are they available down under?

I wonder what Stuey thinks of the step tail.

Welcome to the Breeze shiner.. .. Where abouts in Oz are you?

I'ver used one with a sail and they work good. I had a 4.5m sail on it in about 10 to 12kts and it was really good. Did some driving bottom turns and vertical whacks that I haven't done on a SUP. The sail really helped, but it's a differnt sport altogether when you throw a sail on it.

I did seem to nose dive it a bit coming off the top which was annoying/dangerous.
It was handy with the footstraps compared to the Naish I used without straps.

G'day Shiner,

This doesn't really apply to the Kona SUP but is just some observations about the tail shape on other Kona boards.

Here is a video of a guy on a 11-5 Kona windsurf board. The guy is having fun but don't you just want to lean him into a bottom turn!

And also some photos of a very hardy Scandinavian Dan Cavalli surfing a 10-5. Both 10-5 and 11-5 , have very deep step tails.

This photo from SurfingSports web site shows the tail in the 10-5 (yellow board) - looks wild but you don't notice it except that it really turns on a wave.

I have a 10-5 Kona, superb light wind windsurf wave board and it really surf SUP's well but is pretty tippy at 65cm (25.5") wide, the 11-5 is 75 wide. These boards really turn but it's just about impossible to "feel" the tail release when you surf, you can though when you windsurf on them.

This is an image of a step I put into the tail of my original 10'4 a couple of years ago. Not as deep as the Konas', the step has been in windsurfing for years now, it was originally for the new breed of wide, short race boards of the 90's.

What it did to my old board was give it another life and loosened the board up dramatically. This has lead to my current late tail lift designs, but without the step.

Yes the step has merit not so much for surfing, definitely for windsurfing. I was showing Bill Hamilton (Lairds dad, he visits Coffs regularly for hols) early last year on a tiny surf day and he was telling me that some of the crew in Hawaii doing SUP boards actually have incorporated the step as part of their shorter board designs.

So yes they do work for surfing.

Got up early and had to wait for daylight, no waves tho.
