Hay ya Junoj usually not much swell this time of year better from May-Sept but SUPing u might be lucky with some left over swell generated from theses Low and cyclones. Yardie creek is the best but requires some swell to work otherwise ur in real shallow on the reef. Plus you need a tinnie to travel from the creek mouth out to the break or paddle 2-3k's (search Yardie creek in google maps satilite image to see).
There is a beach break just past the lighthouse first carpark. is before the turtle info centre.
Otherwise there is shipwreks where you turn right a few k's before the lighthouse and should be bout the 2 or third carpark up the shipwreck road Has a be patio shade built there.
Murion islands gets a wave also but is a decent trip in a bigger boat north of Bundigi boat ramp but only worth the trip is the swell is pumping and weather is good.

Usually pretty flat during summer but u may be lucky otherwise a paddle board over Turquoise bay reef on a nice flat day would be good.

What boards u packing?

Let us know how u go

Good luck

Thanks tripped out I thought as much but I am bound to that time with the kids and schools holidays well nephew only.
I have a whopper and a jimmy quad 9.1 love both those boards.
I have hired a boat for the trip up there so I will find some surf some where.
Cheers for the info though it will get me started.

Returned on Sunday from Exmouth after a week of fly fishing in the park and the gulf. There were swell alright but the amount of big sharks we saw were unbelievable. A boat in our group saw a 4 meter plus great white in less than 2 meters of water of oyster beach on Wednesday. When we were chasing tuna even as close as 30m of shore our ratio of fish caught to that what was sharked was about 1 to 4. Big bull sharks would just hang around the boat and wait until a fish was brought in or released. In the park we saw big sharks mainly black tip on a near daily basis and on the second last day a tiger of over 10ft in waist deep water. An amazing place but be very careful out there.

Used to tow a boat up there every couple of years to go fishing. Second longest reef system in the world and unlike the GBR is really close to shore. surf everywhere if youve got a boat. I reiterate what kakkerlak said, this is some seriously sharky water. I have been chased out of the water diving at the murions by a 4 metre tiger shark, and dont recall ever not seeing a shark when out there. Be ultra cautious, the positive is that the waters are so fish rich up there, you would have to think that the sharks arent all that hungry. There is a huge bombie about 5 nautical miles beteen the tip of the gulf and the southern tip of the murion islands. Ive almost come a cropper there in a boat as i was confronted by a set of four 8 to 10 foot waves. there are also heaps of waves on the outside of the reef from tantabiddy boat ramp down. take your trolling gear and sit on the edge of the outside reef. Its mackerel tuna and queenfish city. all along this edge are miles and miles of unsurfed waves breaking on the western edge of the ningaloo reef. awesome potential to score unsurfed unnamed waves all the way down to coral bay. Youll just need some serious balls though to risk all the biteys.

Yeah there's a few sharks but they are so well feed you don't have to worry ... We had GT swimming under us in the surf and lost heaps of fishing to sharks but surfing was fine . Good luck

You'll see some big sharks out past the reef, and any that are closer in shouldn't / won't be too interested in you.

Speaking of big sharks, if in season try to get out for a whale shark dive - pretty amazing stuff.

Hey Junoj, heading up to Exy on Saturday for a week of fishing and Sup ( and poss. some cyclone ducking !!). The track from the Lighthouse road out to the wreck has some great fun waves that are easily accessable from shore.
Been up there heaps over the years, and seen plenty of sharks, but unless you have a fish on a line, they don't seem too interested. Good luck !

Went up there in 2010, had cooking surf a bit further south and nice snorkling around the Yardy area. Did a heap of spearfishing and saw good size reef sharks everytime but none of the nasty ones fortunately.

Make sure you have a paddle on Yardie creek gorge, awesome scenery.

Hi Junoj,

I go up to Ningaloo/Exmouth every winter. It's a sensational playground for all water activities. I surf, SUP, Spearfish, Freedive, Skurf, fish, and Kite the Reef. The others are right, there are literally hundreds of sharks every kilometer but they are rarely interested in anyone but spearo's and lino's.

Plenty of outstanding waves and a few of world class quality. Best bet is to talk to Scotty and Emma of Ningaloo kiteboarding, he can give you the skinny on the do's and don'ts of Sup in Exxy. Send him a PM on SB, his username is Turtlehunter. I believe Dunes is a "don't" although it would be a wicked SUP wave.

Have fun, don't worry about the noah's, just don't sup around with a line off the back of your board with a dead chicken and trails of tuna blood and you should be right.

Drive up to the lighthouse and have a good look around, it should give you a couple of ideas, if there is any swell around.

looks to be plenty who have visited the area. I don't like the sound of that GW in 2m of water off oyster beach (not sure where you mean, would that be the snorkling spot oyster stacks in the national park). More often than not though you will see a few bull sharks and plenty of reefies with the odd docile tiger. The main spots for supping are around the lighthouse to the wreck beaches and if there is cyclone swell they are the pick too. Dunes is the main surf spot there and can get pretty packed in the holidays with kids and mums mainly. Please don't sup there as if your board hits one of the kids you will have everyone against you. Towards the wreck from there though there are plenty of better waves with no surfers out to explore to yourself or with the odd (literally) local super. As for waves on the reef you will need to pick your time and spot carefully or end up on dry coral coping waves on your head 2 to 3km offshore. It takes years to find the right combination with over 140km of reef with 99.9% un surfable so don't expect anyone giving away too much and repercussions for those that do.

I've been out at Dunes and no probs, seemed the same as any other break where reasonably sane people enjoy themselves surfing. Of course there will always be exceptions no matter how hard you try, especially with a mix of annoyed locals and greedy travellers. As pickers said - respect.

There is another break at Hunters Beach which is pretty good for SUP as well.

Both breaks are well known so expect that if a wave is running then there will be people out.

Lucky you and Good Luck!
