Amazing photo Gizzie they are one freaky looking beast.

Bit saddened though. Its live and let live as far as I'm concerned.

As far as I know there have been no recorded attacks on humans from hammers in Australian waters, shame we can't return the favour.

Another majestic animal bites the dust

I don't like seeing them dead either termite as we are the ones that are invading their territory. BUT, hammerheads are a major contributor to shark attacks in Aus, well over 30 in the last few years I'm pretty sure. Not an excuse I know, just clearing up the attack thing.

Wow, I didn't know they could get that large. Oliver let me google that for you, and wiki also agrees that they can be up to 20 feet long!! Huge !

Poor old thing, but it has probably had a reasonable life, and might have been in old age anyway.... (???)

Hi Aussiefreebs

I stand corrected. You probably have better info that me but the Global Shark Attack file listed around 4 attacks attributed to hammers in Aust since records have been collected. Two of them provoked and all non fatal.

The file for Great Hammerheads included: The species is thought to be dangerous, though relatively few incidents have been attributed to it or any other species of hammerhead sharks. The shark has approached divers without displaying aggression. However, due to its size and broad food spectrum the shark should be treated with caution.

I would definately treat something that size with caution and hopefully from a good distance

Sorry, didn't see the link in the first post, so I may have been a little hasty in my response. I just read it and it says 33 attacks attributed to hammerheads. Maybe this is what I had heard. When I check it though it says since 1580, who knows lol..?.?

Regardless of the numbers of attacks, or the species, it's no reason to see them dead. Just my opinion.

Seems wrong to kill it for sure just because its big with sharp pointy teeth. Wouldn't like it nipping at me but if its just swimming along doing what it has evolved to do you would think they should just leave it alone or let it go or something.
Meanwhile back in gizzie the water is still nice & warm but early morning temperatures are making it a bigger effort to do the dawn patrol. Maybe a shiny new wetsuit is in order

Yikes that's huge! I knew they grew to that size but seeing that pic kinda puts into perspective. We have quite a few baby hammers wash up on our beach each year, allegedly it's a breeding ground and that would make sense as we have a fairly sheltered beach with a mangrove estuary for the little uns to seek refuge in.

BUT they have to get there in the first place which is a bit of a worry I was out supping the bar monday before last, I finished one wave deep into the estuary mouth and had that Hmmm not very comfortable , best move on quickly feeling. Yep bit of a nip in the mornings just of late.

look at that fricken clown acting like he is a big game hunter. Imagine the uproar if he was standing next to a rhino or something. One day hopefully shark phobia and media paranoia will be a thing of the past and Vic Hislop! someone should put him on ice.

Look at it this way the death of this shark may lead to the protection of others ....... now that this big fella has vacated his turf lets see what shark or sharks will take his place , they maybe not as tame as the big fella.

Having this shark frozen and put on display will raise awareness and in the long run help the cause to protect them.

On the non Green side of me a bull shark has taken up residence in my canal where my kids & dogs regularly paddle and swim , that shark won't last the long weekend.

We have had a 2m great white take up residence in the lake where I paddle.....doesnt seem too fazed by humans either, coming right up to boats. At least the kids have stopped jumping off the bridge!
