Been sup'ing for nearly a year now and am using a simon anderson 11' x 30" and now ready to go smaller (for the surf) and considering something either 9' or 9'6".
Would this be a good size or should I be looking more around 10'. I am 85kg

Definetly Sub 10-0 , plenty of good volume 9-6's around like the Coreban Performer or if you wanted to go a bit shorter the PSH 9-2 Wide Ripper still carries good volume and stability ,very popular board.

I was in same situation as you. I went for a 9' 4" and haven't looked back. I am 90kg and have had board for 2 years and thinking of going smaller now as my balance has improved greatly over this time.

At 106kgs, I made the leap from an 11'6" (beginner surfer @38y/o) to a 9'8". It's pushing the limit for me in volume & width, but I've already noticed a huge improvement on my technique & fitness. Now when I jump on the 11'6" for a flatwater paddle, I don't bother with a wetty as I know I won't come off (or hope not).

Try and demo the Naish 9'5" surf well and is really stable. Or try the Laguna 9'1.

+ 1

And the new starboard pocket rocket 8.5 x 30 will be arriving next month with a new shape and fin setup and it will be perfect for your weight and requirements if you are tempted to go for a purely surf focussed board. Yes, its very small - but heaps of float and stability, lightweight, and surfs unreal.
The new Starboard 9.5 is also going to be a fantastic allrounder with surf focus if you were only wanting to have the one board.

The Paddle Surf Hawaii 9'6 Wide Allrounder is a great step down board from bigger models.

A good stable flatwater paddler , surfs well of the tail or the nose if you like to walk the board a bit. Can easily take a heavier rider up to 95/100kgs and can be set up as a quad or 2 plus one .

There is one listed in the Buy & Sell section.

Definitely worth a look.

Simon Anderson have a 9' Carrier coming out so well worth a look it should surf well with maximun stability for most.

Also I have tested 9' 5" mana, 9 Angulo Surfa, 9' 4" oxbow, 9 ' Coreban Fusion and now 9' 1" Jimmy Lewis Kwad. They all would do the task for you depending on what you want so as I do demo for a few days if you can.

Definately go for something in the 9-9.5 ft range, if you go bigger you'll probably want to downsize again soon. There's heaps of options available in that size and definately demo as many as possible to figure out what's right for you.

The Fanatic All Wave would also be worth considering. I took the smaller 8'10" out for a surf this morning and it really surprised me how well it surfed for a wider board (i'm used to surfing much smaller/lower volume boards). It's super super stable, I even managed to paddle it standing on one foot for a bit. I'm 78kg so not much lighter than you, but there's also a couple on bigger All Wave models too.

Also paddled the 9'5" Naish Hokua yesterday and it's pretty stable and surfed really well too.

I'm 85kg purchased a Fanatic All Wave 9'6" as a second board a few weeks ago to use in surf and for wife to paddle in creek "but mostly for wife to use honestly" and I am Loving it. So stabble and turns so easy.

I used that same reason (excuse) to buy my 2nd board.

thanks for all the replies. Have tried a few boards but am keen to try the 8'10" fanatic allwave and the simon anderson 9' carrier. The build quality of the anderson I know is good but don't really know enough about the fanatic.

Haven't you guys seen the news articles? Aussie board builders dropping like flies.

So many suggestions and nothing that vaguely resembles an Aussie made board. Call Dale Chapman or DMS Dan McDonald and get a better board with more value. It's tough economic times surely it's time for SUP retailers and surfers to support the locally made option. Seriously???

P.s if you want a Simon call walk on water or dolphin and have them make one for you. You can even talk to Simon himself. Your board might help a glasser or sander to pay his power bill or spend that money in your or one of your friends businesses making sure you have a Job next week as well...... Think!

I agree CMC I'm WOODY all the way for a good high performance SUP and DEEP for a great 12'6'' BOP SUP and SIC for a good Downwind SUP I know SIC is not Australian but no other Downwind board comes close. The only thing I buy for China is if somebody gives it to me for FREE.
