Forgive me Breezers for what I am about to say.

After the broken ribs I am seriously struggling in the surf. Had an awesome session last night at OG on the gun way too much fun but paying for it this morning in spades.

Objective: To beat the cheeky 14yr old who is wooping my ass in the surf by miles and now thanks to Lummer input in the river as well

Factors: Wide a$$ owner 105 - 110kG ( covers winter and summer fluctuations)

Application: "Gulps" flat water racing and down winders and fun paddles on the river.

Length: Max 12'6 any bigger hard to transport and store.

Suggest away!

Phill

Sorry to hear you are in pain and struggling with the ribs Phil.
Flat water will be great, you'll still get a buzz from it and it will strengthen you and assist your recovery, and hopefully in time you'll be back charging the waves.
All the best.

Hi Phil,
I'm thinking of getting a board for similar purposes. Flat water cruising, taking the kids out, something anyone can jump on and have a go, as well as down winders and open ocean paddling. I reckon the 12'6" starboard cruiser is going to tick all the boxes and would have to be one of the more versatile big boards on the market.

Hi Phill,

Sorry to hear about your ribs - mine is still sore from last year if I prone paddle so I can only imagine what yours still feels like. Lent my old 12'6 to a mate for the summer hols down at Wye River, rang me all excited about catching 12 waves on his first day but ended up at the end of the holiday trying to get over that "just too big" wall of white-water, fell forward hard followed by the inevitable crack of rib on rail. Good thing was that he reported he could still paddle, just couldn't swim!

Why don't you have a go on my Starboard "The Pin" next weekend, stable and fast.
BWDave really likes it and he is 105kg.

There is another one coming in that might be interesting, the Free Race 12'6 in both 29 and 31 widths.

I know a shipment of 2010 boards came in last week, don't know if there were any in that batch though.

I just read your original post again where you mentioned more racing and down winders rather than just cruising so maybe there are faster boards than the 12'6" on the market. That new starboard looks interesting, I think thats the one Scott McKercher paddled in the Dr race last week.

Why not get Dean to shape something for you? You can try out his 12'6" protos and work out what you want (then tell us what you came up with so we can get one too. )

For training purposes I had a lovely flat water paddle on my 9' last night. I paddled out of the local bay and hit a 20 knot northerly gust dead on. It was good practice for dealing with chop but no fun for paddling. I turned around and headed back to the bay and had fun practicing fore and backhand pivot turns, chasing the odd stingray and being a marker buoy for some 5 year olds playing in the water.

After that the wind dropped off and I paddled a few hundred metres up the coast. All up an hour of paddling, lots of useful technique practice, some great insights into paddle length and a casual stroll home with my board tucked under my arm.

I understand the new range of 2010 race boards won't leave the factory until March. Not sure what was in last week's shipments but it would seem to be not the Free Race, the Surf Race or the New.

Speaking of which, if Phill wants to beat the cheeky 14 year old on flat water, the 12'6 x 23.5" "New" would absolutely kick her arse. Don't know if you'd be able to stand up on it in a choppy downwinder; I'm sure I couldn't.

That may have been the Surf Race rather than the Free Race.

Naish 12' Glide seems to tick all the boxes as well.

Haven't riden one, but they do look nice and have heard nothing but good reports from those who have riden or own.

I reckon go for the 14' AST Glide for sure.. You can thanks me later.. .. 18" isn't that much more but so much better for what you want.

The 12' AST Glide is probably next best IMO.

hi phil, forget the 12,6's for a bloke like you. go the glide 14'. might not be the fastest flatwater board, but it will carry you and from what i've seen and heard, it is an a1 downwind board. if i know you and your competitive daughters, you will all be out in the ocean in no time, so get a board that will do the job
cheers
ps get some expert advice on how to paddle. trotting out in the surf is one thing, ocean paddling needs really good technique as i found out in the coffs race. i only feel now with some tips from the oc crew i'm getting a handle on it

Jonathon the website recommends the 29" only for lighter riders and flatter water. Is this irrevocable or is there an experience factor here as well? In a distance board I'd rather go narrower.

Also to Phil, Go the Starboard cruiser 12'6 or the Naish Glide. 12' is good 14' is better but IMO those extra 18 inches do make the dry land logistics somewhat more difficult.

Hey DJ,

I would like to go 14 but, most of the races still cap at 12 and that concerns me!

phil, 14' is the future of the sport. 12'6 aren't that much fun in the deep. not too many people on the goldie are fronting up to do d/w ers on them, and most those that have them,12'6, are looking for longer
cheers

Thank you to everone for your input, it really is appreciated!

I agree after seeing Matt Lumley work with Kristi professional advice on stroke etc is critical. Makes a huge difference.

Does anyone have thoughts on the best fin?????????

The other thing is that they are so light that if you fall and hit one it will just push away and not break ribs (seriously).

Gorgo,

I agree the light boards would be much better from that perspective.

Boards like the gun in the surf are an issue when you get it wrong, put simply they are unforgiving. If you fall 5 ft down onto the rail rebounding vertically you will get hurt. Had the same situation occured with the DC 9.4 I may have just caved the rail in or as you say pushed it out of the way.

I dont think there will be too many issues with injuries like mine in flat water racing or even down winding but I guess its possible.

Mate your a pro ...... you completed the big downwinder at the Mambo ....

Sorry to here your ribs are still causing you pain .

Have you looked at the C4 Range ? theres a 12fter there the same as Stuart Murray had at the Mambo and he did really well on it.

I still think you should go the 14fter ..... I'm really happy with my 14ft C4 Vortice.
Anyway DJ should have heaps of room at his place so you can store it there ,as he's proably making room for another longer board after he bought the 17ft Naish !

Hey Craig,

Awesome to see your back in the water! The Mambo down winder is still vivid in my mind lol.

I remember side slipping down many swells with Matty Boy and I bring up the rear and Kristi scooting along on the DC 9'4 at mach 5 then Rich handing me a freezing cold Gaterade at the end (what a legend).

The gun and open ocean downwinders with big side swell is not an option at my size laughs.

I have to say the it was DJ firing us all up that caused the need to have a go.

I found some lost footage that was never finished because it would scare the kids!
