State titles are to be held at Woolamai next Saturday, not sure of any other details or heat draw, but the event was postponed from February due to very poor conditions. Despite the delay of almost 4 months there were no other entries permitted. This has meant lots of very talented surfers not attending and potentially, what could have been a well advertised and organized Sup Surfing Carnival similiar to the other States is now..... well, our event is tacked on to a shortboard comp...... Now I don't want to appear ungrateful at all for the efforts made by those organizing the States but I believe, again my opinion only, is that there should have been a better situation achieved with a collective inclusive response from those parties interested in organizing a true showcase of where Sup Surfing is at here in Victoria. ....
I agree, OcK Finally we get a location that is reliable for some swell and they close the entries. After missing cranking 13th (last year) to surf 2ft point danger at last years states, I couldn't go through it again so didn't even consider entering this years. Ah well thats what happens.. Maybe next year we may be seen to more than longboarding with a paddle or "Gay gondoliers" and be given a chance for everyone to show their skills in real waves.
For Surfing Vic to not open up entries for the resheduled comp is rediculous. Their reason for it is pretty clear considering it is tacked onto the end of a shortboard comp......time factor to run heats. Waste of time running it with the handful of participants given the allocations available for nationals.....everyone will qualify anyway. Hopefully in future state titles will be run by SUP Vic on behalf of Surfing Vic. SUP Vic have proven they can run a good comp and a couple of other states have already set a precedent where SUP clubs run their State Titles on behalf their State branch of Surfing Aust. Surfing Vic should be all for it as the running costs wouldn't be coming out of their pockets. Whatever happens, it can only get better from here on.....couldn't get too much worse.
Running costs are ultimately the biggest factor here, given that many of our best SUP surfers chose not to pay up to enter, and that meant a big loss for the organisers after all the running costs were factored in. The reasons why this occurred are well known and not in dispute - the conditions were crap, the timing and location were not ideal, and mother nature paid out big time, we all know that.
The rescheduled titles has costs already paid for by the shortboard event so it's literally being run on a shoestring budget. Reasons why entry wasn't reopened have been speculated on in the posts above, and I'm imagine they are pretty accurate.
In future, if we get the opportunity to compete in a separate state titles event once again, we need to schedule it at a location and time with the best likelihood of good, contestable waves, and then we need to have the crew commit to the event. That means entering regardless, and even if the forecast looks a bit soft a few days out, we don't leave the organisers with a financial disaster. It's a two-way street. Perhaps we can have a wider contest window or a Plan B to reschedule, but the crew really needs to back the event to guarantee it happens.
Although I am perplexed at surfing Victoria for their many arguable decisions. It would be detrimental to us all to turn up and feel second class or not wanted at all. I entered this comp to lend support and encourage one and all, with numbers comes power and influence. I guess what I'm saying is yes SV stuffed up but lets get on with it and get stuck into it.
If cost is truly the ultimate concern then draft a business proposal that says SUP Vic will run it and pay for it.
Include the costs for Surf Vic to supply the professional judges and scoring, that way there is no financial loss to Surf Vic and they make some money too = Win Win.
If it costs people $100 a head to enter this time to cover the costs then maybe its worth it to get all the Vic SUPers involved.
If the business plan is not adopted by Surf Vic then it really isn't a financial issue that is causing the problem then is it, as there is a no financial loss option for Surf Vic.
So who else will enter if Phils proposal existed?? Sign Troy and I up for $100.00 for sure! Anyway, whats a competition with out all contenders..? We want the best team we can representing our state... What ever it takes.
P.S Have a look at Tassies effort.. 'Having a go' I recon..
I think the idea that any future State Sup Surfing Titles will be run by Sup Vic is guaranteed, further this will be done with both the approval of Surfing Victoria as well as helping achieve the stature such a competition requires.
We as suppers in Victoria, need to embrace the opportunities to bring this into action by participation in putting your hands up to be involved both in a physical and financial sense.
What the Surfing side of Sup Vic hope to do is provide a healthy comp scene to promote all participation levels and in doing so, by charging a reasonable amount for entry and gathering good sponsorships to build a strong financial club that has the potential to offer and promote experiences on both genres of sup be it surf or technical at a Nationally competitive level.
Here in Vicco we are lucky to have a ****load of talented people with surfing expertise and management skills that are required to help and not to stand idly by for others to do the work, get involved and support Sup Vic. Come along to the AGM 26th May and make a stand.....
Mmmmm .. Yes.. If our rep can do us proud in Hawaii then I'm all over he/she .. I take pride in our state .. I dont like hoaxes. Anyone heard of Peter Lalor..? Ned Kelly?? Stand the **** up !
Glad to see it is all very well orginised, we have emails saying the Vic Titles are at Phillip Island and on the Website it is saying they will be at Torquay??????? Has anybody got more details that may help us all to turn up to the one place. We could have surfers over 200km apart!!!
Jeez that's p.ss poor Gotta assume that there will be people who have booked accommodation on the Island who would be looking for a definitive fairly smartly. I sent an email about a month back asking wether the Island was still all go. Lazy sods wouldnt even reply, just sent me a link to the newsletter. It took a fair amount of digging but the info then said Phillip Island tacked on to the short boarders. Do you reckon their trying to tell us something?? My theory is if we renamed ourselves something snappy, like Surfers in Suits for example, or better still Boarders with Big Bucks, they would be humping our collective leg like a dog in heat! As it is we're getting treated like the Bastard Children of Yass.......Get in the car Leon!!! Cheers Sparx

Just checked SV site and location is set now to Phillip Island.

I suggest an inner city hipster style - all black polo neck long sleeve shirts - we'd be SUP'ers in Skivvies.
I've seen you all. Most of you already are SUPers in Skivvies!!! and thermals, and incontinence pads etc.. I've actually designed and am trialling a brand of IC pads especially for geriatric old wannabes!! Unfortunately I seem to always leave them full of p--s and s--t!! I'm thinking of naming them 'Surfing Victoria' and selling them already loaded??? What do you reckon boys?? I'll donate all profits to......?

This has to be your next Australia Day Outfit PT, "The hipster wiggle". The kids will either love it or cry all the way home.
Heat schedule will be sent out by surfvic tomorrow, forecast looking a little better today with a bit more east in the wind, swell size ok for the open beaches,

It would be a great idea for Surfing Victoria and a mark of great respect for those Suppers participating to get all the Sup heats and finals out of the way first up in the morning so then they can get on with the shortboarding comp without any further unnecessary interruptions. I hope they see the reasoning in that idea.....
Giday All, if anyone is not able to compete in the mens open or over 40s (or both) can you please let me know as I'm on stand by. Thanks guys Courtney.

i'm not have a go at you, but do you have to qualify for your states, just doesn't seem to be many entries ?
The event was to be held in Feb, not a good time for swell but nonetheless, quite a few suppers played wait and see, the surf forecast was not to favorable, some registered some did not, so the combination of the lack of surf and virtually no publicity about the event... the event was cancelled... until now, this weekend, some 4 months later, but for reasons unknown, there were no new entries accepted.
Sup Vic held a surf event a few weeks back that attracted some 35 entries with only limited notice, we know of lots more that would have come along as well... stayed tuned, The Winter Classic coming soon...
However, moving forward... no, there are not that many surfers but I can guarantee the Surfers that will be there, are some of the finest that Vicco has to offer and will be putting on a show second to none.
