extract from article/interview

Can you tell about your involvement in the development of the SUP? What it was originally created for? And how do you feel about it being used in the line-up nowadays?

?Beachboy-style surfing,? as we pioneers called it, had been around for ages but had never been modernized or taken to a more sophisticated level. Brian Keaulana, a true pioneer in many fields, especially water safety/rescue, took up this activity with a lot of zeal and within a few months revolutionized it to the point where it is recognizable in its present form. I was more or less the Tom Blake to his Duke Kahanamoku here, building all the prototype stand-up boards, including but not limited to the very first short SUPs and downwind raceboards.

What is now known as SUP was intended by Brian and I to escape crowds and move into uncontested realms further afield. While it could be argued that stand-up paddle surfing has spread people out more rather than causing more crowding, it is obvious that human nature being what it is, there are quite a few imbeciles abusing them just as they did modern longboards and leashes when they appeared. Just as dynamite and aviation were meant to benefit mankind, they all too often ended up being the tools of evil, and I find myself at present in the position of Charles Lindbergh, who spent most of his life championing aviation but who at the end of his life turned his back on it, as he was disenchanted at how the airplane had wrought so much destruction through the turmoil of the 20th Century.

I have always made it clear that nobody should be using SUP surfboards at any break with a history of use as a conventional surfing spot.

Sure he's done a lot for design, but SUPs should be used where ever people want to use them as long as they do so responsibly & with consideration for others...... & the guy compared himself to Charles Lindburgh?? Sounds like a nutter with delusions of grandeur!!!

My kids hardly ever played with their toys the way they were supposed to...Mrs C and I took it as a sign of "creative intelligence"

Was puzzled by the red thumbs.....had to read it. Have to agree with you teatrea.....sups all too often used as the "tools of evil"
...yet another surf guru who has lost the plot and believes his own legend perhaps

Exactly my thoughts , diidnt this guy design the subvector , so where did he think this was going to be ridden. Sounds like sour grapes to me , dont hear much about c4 anymore?Any way i found it amusing. Glad i diidnt take his advice this afternoon caus the Alley was sooo much fun .And you wouldnt believe it the sups and the prones where getting on like a house on fire , everyone was just stoked to get some pretty good wavesThe guy is clearly an egomaniac , funny enough like a lot of shortboarders

i think it depends of your background.

if your a shortboarder then you hate sups. Even if you sup yourself.

if you've never surfed, prior to suping then the view is different.

I'm both ways, interesting tho

Yea right, he's a bit confused. Though his words do bring up a point that is difficult to deal with. A lineup already under stress
from longboards and other easy entry shapes - gets put out of whack by the intro of sup.

I won't sit over a pack laydowns. Generally I get a guilty feeling and move off to the side, or look further up the beach. The best spot on my coast
is mafia controlled, no sups allowed outside the family. As a life long laydown surfer I understand their feelings. But I don't completely give in,
I will surf this spot at first light, and surf until it crowds, once and awhile.

Times are a changing and I've got legitimate rights too.
