The board looks ok.. The paddle looks like crap.. Pop into your local sup shop and buy a decent one.. The paddle's the most important part..

Right, this is how this crap works.

Old mate from Saven SUP has ordered a container of generic boards off a catalogue from a Chinese factory. His total input to the board is the decal design and position. At $639 with a paddle when you factor in freight, BAF, Duties, Customs charges, GST etc he is just breaking even.

If there is one thing I have learnt about wealthy people is that they like to stay that way. Old mate with his $30K or so spare to spend on his container will not likely do another order as he now has only broken even and figures there's better things he can do with $30K to make money.

I just wish his container was opened on the docks and pinched by Customs for improper country of origin labelling and his prepaid amount was done like a dinner at Christmas.

The stupid thing is he could have sold them at $900 with a paddle and it would still be cheaper than most and they would sell. This cut and run crap is a no win for anyone......

Yep, wish I saw this post before I bought :S

I ordered a SUP board from Savenplay.com.au

It came with major damage to the tail - big cracks and the actual lamination separated... it was clearly dropped during shipping as there's still packing foam pushed into the damaged area.

I called Hunter Express - the courier company he uses - and they told me to get Savenplay to put in a claim... he refused, saying that in his 10 years of dealing with them, they won't cover it... so tells me to just get it repaired?!

Also, the FCS fin slots - two of them have globs of epoxy resin that was spilled during the shoddy manufacturing process and not cleaned out, so the fins won't sit in the slot properly, not to mention that one of the FCS screws can't be removed because it's "glassed-in" with resin as well - would need to take a drill to it to be able to get to the screw, which potentially could ruin the thread. I'm hesitant in trying to fix anything until I get a proper response from both savenplay and hunter express couriers :S

Not sure what to do as I haven't had a response to any of my emails to Hunter Express - if I call them, they just tell me to email.

The board seemed to be very well packed... lot's of bubble wrap inside the box and reinforced with extra foam and cardboard on the nose and tail... but either the courier dropped it REALLY hard on the tail, or it's a cheap crappy glassing job that it got THAT damaged if it was only a light hit during transit... lots of pressure dings all along the board too - looks like a 2nd hand board that's been used once, fallen onto and dropped ;)

Learnt my lesson, I will only be buying local from now on...

Always comes back to

"Generally if it's cheap, it's cheap for a reason"

Even if it gets on the water cheap, it prob won't keep you on the water very long.

I hear horror stories about this nearly every week with poor innocent people getting talked into buying a sup from cheap cheap old mate down the road.

Within a few weeks they've already paid the price of cheap.

Also buying online is a HUGE risk! Better to go into a good local sup shop or shaper and pick it up yourself.

Once it's left the cheap place in it's box, it then becomes your responbility and once you've signed for the box, it's yours. Harsh i know. Online buying a SUP board not a good idea.

However the place you brought it from should offer some sort of help or assistance for you in repair of the board.

Yep... this was gonna be my first SUP... only ever had short boards - been wanting to get into SUP for a year or two, but the price always kept me from doing it.

I guess the size of the boards had something to do with it too, since I've only got a small car which can't take roof racks - and even if it could, the roof on it's too small for this size of board ;)

But we recently moved into a unit across the road from the broadwater with our own double garage, so I now have somewhere to store it and can just walk over with the board - until I get used to it and maybe get a van in 6 months time or something?? So something delivered sounded like the perfect option... and at a price I could at least sort of afford ;)

I was gonna see how it went... though now I've just got a busted board, where one of the fins won't even go in, so haven't been able to try it out...

But like I said - learnt the hard way ;) won't be doing it again - all my short boards have been made by local shapers, never had a problem there. When it comes to boards at least, you get what you pay for... though in my case, what I got wasn't even worth it's "cheap" price.

What a shocker, hope you get this sorted out iFX.

I have a classic tale of generic online vs brand name.
My mate and I wanted to get into SUP but had limited cash. He went online and got the whole package deal, I did some research (breeze was great) even warned my mate but I decided to go second hand off the breeze for a well known brand.
A few months later my mates board looks like a two year old + board, pressure dings all over it, cracked tail and rails and fin plug falling out! My board is looking as good as ever and I reckon its had more use than my mates.

We received ours as well. I was worried that either we wouldn't get them or they'd be dinged up like yours. I have a lot of sympathy for you as I could see how easily it could have happened to me. However ours arrived without a scratch. Centre fin in one was a tight fit but otherwise I couldn't have been happier with the boards. Tried them out a couple of times and they haven't sunk! So far all is good but only time will tell.

DJ, you were spot on, the paddle is terrible. will be getting some better ones by the end of the week!

I think these boards at this price still has a place. It's an expensive sport and I have too many surfboards and bikes to justify buying another expensive toy. I simply wouldn't have started paddling if this deal didn't come up. the fact that my wife loves it and we could get 2 boards for the price of 1 decent second hand one is a huge bonus. If we use them enough then we'll get rid of them and buy some good quality boards. I am sure there are plenty of people in the same boat as me who just can't justify the big outlay.

Good luck with getting your board sorted out. either savenplay or the courier company surely has to reimburse you. Like sharpie said, take it further

You have chinese boards and chinese boards.

Some (most actually, it seems) brands just order generic models over the phone, with the charismatic well known shaper of the brand having never set foot in China. It seems the vast majority of brands just choose the colors & logo, even the rail shape and fin placement is totally decided by chinese people that have never surfed (or even seen the ocean). And the construction methods can be abysmal.

Very few brands have their main shaper/glassers fly to China many times a year and actually teach the Chinese workers in person how to shape & glass, position fin boxes, etc... One way to detect them is to see if they hide the fact that the boards are made by chinese workers (if in the photos the people holding the boards have their face blurred or hidden, that is not a good sign: brands that try to have quality craftmen are proud of them, whatever nationality).

Moreover, there is hope that raising the qualifications of chinese workers will result in raising their salaries, alleviating the offsourcing pressure onprice on craftmen in other countries.... well, one can have hope :-)
