I have had a go at making a hollow wooden SUP. I have finished the construction of it, now it is ready for glassing. I was thinking of doing 1 layer of 6 oz top and bottom, does anyone have an opinion weather that is enough.

Yeh makes slot of sense to reinforce where I stand, I might run an extra layer from handle to tail. Yeh Lacey, I designed to templates myself, it wasn't that hard I designed the board in aku shaper then spliced it every 6 inches, printed out splices than subtracted rails and top and bottom thickness. Not sure of weight yet, I'll weigh it after glassing.
hey rocket, to much time on your hands on school hollies eh never seen 30 odd clamps on a job in one go Board is gonna look great cant wait to see the finished product. as for your q id think that 6 and 6 should be enough

sweet looking lump of wood, thommo,s got a good point on the tak coat before glassing, but looking at what you,ve done so far you really know what you,r doing.
Top job mate well done, are you going to seal it before glassing to stop the resin from soaking in....?
Did the laminating layers today, I didn't seal as I was told paulownia does not absorb resin. I mixed up the same amount of resin as I have done when glassing polystyrene and I had just under half left over. That foam must really suck it in.

I guess when glassing foam all the open cells must be filled too ,I have heard Paulownia is an oily timber and epoxy sticks best ?
Hey Lats I used kinetix epoxy resin for the lay up and will be using polyester resin for the filler and gloss coats. I used 1 layer of 6 oz on bottom and 1 and I/2 layers on top so yes on most of my rails I have 3 layers after the wrap.
Hey DJ unbelievable looking kayaks makesy board pale in comparison, I wouldn't have they patience to even attempt something like that.

There are big issues making the poly resin adhere to the epoxy (despite what ATL says), you may be better off using more kinetix for the filler (make sure there is no amine blush trapped in the laminate layer), then sand that and spray clear two pack urethane to get the gloss. Certainly some timber boards are fuly glassed in polyester for clarity and ease of glossing up (i would do that for a wall board) but it can/will delaminate off in use and be a disaster to try and fix.
I would put a patch of 6oz where you stand and maybe around the rails where you might hit it with the paddle.

the bottom glass will wrap around the rail and double the thickness there , or do you suggest 3 layers ?
Yea that would do I recon, some clear tape on the rails would protect it when finished, but do you want to put tape over your art work? If you arnt going to use it for surfing it wont matter I wouldnt think just for cruising.

my 6'6" hollow timber fish weighs in at ~5kgs. This has 6mm timber decks and 6oz glass and patches its heavy but the weight disapears in the water. The other board is a 6'2" fish with 2.5mm timber skins over polystrene this is lighter than a poly board and supper strong

Your shorty is probably 2.5 to 2.8 kg. A team 6'1 one layer of 4 each side with ultra lite foam in PU is 2.25. Easy to do lighter in EPS but do not surf well.
I would love to make a wooden board, the laminated boards are easily made and probably more performance based.

Bugger I wish I read your comment earlier Lats, I did the filler coat today in polyester and have sanded it ready for the finish coat tomorrow. As I haven't got the proper polishing gear it would of been easier to spray it with clear.
Hey Shunter nice looking boards. I am a industrial arts teacher on the gold coast and every year the yr 12s make surfboards. I have been making my board at school and the students are super keen to make timber boards, most of them want to make fishes or old school single fins. I will definetly show them yours.
