A very interesting product that is coming out next month:
A leash with a safety inner cord inside the urethane tube, to be able to get back to the land with the board if the leash breaks, + a prominent quick release tab

Looks interesting.
But will that "bail safe" quick-release mechanism actually release the leash under load? XM and DaKine have been using a similar system to several years now but if you put the leash under load like it would be in an emergency and pull the pin, you'll find that the leash does not usually release at all as easily as you'd expect, or like happens when the leash is not under load. It's a real eye-opener. So, when considering the value of these features, try the leash under load. You may decide that a waist leash is best, or attaching a small float to the release tab of your leash cuff so that it makes it quicker and easier to find in an emergency situation.
But the extra cord thing here is probably a step in the right direction. What is the special cord made of? Is the (presumably) hollow leash more likely to break in the first place than a solid one? What is the max load of the inner safety cord? Lots of Qs that need answering here.
What is the stretch like or does the rope remove that? A bit of shock absorption is needed or we would all be using " cord" othewise known as rope.
Crook knees - would like to try waist leash setup - any "surf" setups commercially available? Or do you get a divers belt and hook a normal leggie onto it?

Yup, my first leash was a rubber tube with a cord inside.
The rubber was eaten very quickly by the salt, but it was a nice concept.

I think the difference is that the metal cord has give. If you look at Darth's swellnet link above you can see a close-up of the cord. The "rubber" will stretch and the metal cord will too - it is like a "Chinese finger trap".
And I seem to remember if the nylon chord through the guts broke or came undone the old black rubber stretched for a mile and came back at you from a long way away at a rate of knots! Wasn't that fun!
