that little bit of weather we had was in no way a cylcone for us....I think that last close cyclone the GC had was about 1988.... it seems that for some reason in the age of status updates and 24hr information about every little thing, that things have been forgotten and things blown out of proportion.
this is in no way taking away from those affected by this current storm, but it has been before and will be worse at some point....
No it was no longer a cyclone, it was however stronger and more sustained than a category 1 cyclone.
What was unique was that it travelled parallel with the coastline at a very slow speed. Most cyclones get a run up, head inland and then die. This one stayed on the coast and fed itself from the coral sea so that it did not die beyond transforming from TC to Tropical Low.
Yes, we've had bigger storms and I remember 88 could be 89 but I can't remember anything that went for nearly 3 days with that much wind and rain.
