Have just received the info from SUP Australia on the Surftech Winter Classic in Mornington Peninsula, With a 10km downwinder and races on the Sunday it sounds like fun. Could be an opportunity to do a DW with DJ! The only issue is, it mentioned wetsuits, hood and booties and as I have just returned from our time trial this morning where we raced in boardies and T-shirt it sounds bloody cold.

I can understand a wettie, but booties and hood?

Could be a 4 day weekend and a road trip coming up.

Nobody wears a hood on a DW down here. If it's a race, we don't even wear wetsuits. Booties entirely optional on the bay but a necessity in the rivers.

Thanks Paul - hopefully the downwinder is something like Port Stephens and you and I can battle it out again. There's a bit of interest up here so there could be a crew heading down. One week before the Nationals it could be a good hit out for those who made the team.
I've organised the trailer and extra boards. Now just need to clear it with the boss.

Yeah that end of the bay is a balmy 12.8 degrees.......beautiful compared to the northern end at 10.8.
Hopefully we score a weekend like the one just had....with a bit more wind on the Saturday.

What's the most common breeze this time of year for you guys?
Always been keen for a Melbourne downwinder and this one sounds good.
Sam.

Hi Sam,
we mainly wait for a strong northerly wind for a downwind run along the top east side of the bay, Jonathan is the only person I know who has spent some time recently paddling the section of the bay where the event will be and he's in Bali at the moment so we may not get a comment from him until he's back but I'd say the organizers are hoping for a wsw wind between Rye and Dromana, there's also options in Westernprt Bay which has a different facing coastline,
be great to have a crew down from New South what ever the conditions

Cheers Camo,

Hope to get on down for the weekend. 2 weekends in a row would be a nice treat so might have to make it happen.

Sam.

Hey John, Port Stephens type conditions might be a touch ambitious given how epic it was that day but we can certainly keep our fingers crossed for something similar. I can guarantee that there won't be any advantage to the Vicco locals as we don't tend to venture down that far to the southern end of the bay for downwinders. It will be a new experience for everyone.

Hey guys - wear whatever you like to paddle in

But I have to say with the bay water temp (at the moment 11 deg C) and if the SW is blowing the wind chill is a factor so booties and a hoodie are welcome additions to the paddling attire!

Makes us think we in warmer climates.
