The first ever Suplove Freestyle event went down on saturday 12 february at the St Kilda festival in Melbourne much to the delight of the gathered crowd.

This new event for flatwater for festivals and events uses a stage set on water. The judging criteria is based on Artistic expression, Skill on Sup, Interpretation, Innovation and Creativity. The stage is yours.

In the closely fought battle between ten Suplove Freestylers, the eventual winner was local Richard Bray with a classic "walk the plank" and the acrobatic "back sup flip".

The photo below shows a dleighted Richard Bray after winning the inaugural event recieving his congradulations from event designer Stuart Murray. Below that highlights some small wave freestyle moves busted on the day.

Did anybody do the "Casso" - jump up from surf stance, spin 360 degrees in the air and land back in the starting position?

If so, I hope they haven't re-named it something else.

BTW - apparently it gets negative points in a surfing comp (according to the SPSC head judge).

" The Casso " was not spotted at St Kilda.

Fair chance of a high score I reckon though in a Suplove Freestyle event tho.

If it is pulled of with a bit of style, grace and flair, casso style!!!

think it is called the "3-self-60" all you no board. Kind of like in the days of grommet-hood where you would see the "arm-re-entry" lots of arms moving and not much board :)

Just to clarify, the Casso does not automatically get negative points. When done once it does get a positive score, but then if instantly repeated with another rotation back in the opposite direction, the second reverse rotation gets a negative score, therefore effectively negating the score of the first rotation.

As I was only acting head judge for the day at the SPSC comp ( normally I'm just assistant head judge) the above decision had to be made under extreme pressure in the heat of the moment. However, I stand by this call and feel that it should clarify how to approach judging all Casso's in the future.
