Alright I'm looking at getting into SUP over the next couple of weeks and will likely buy a board too should I enjoy it as much as I expect too. But before all of that I want to know whether most people have had lessons when starting out as I have looked into it and there don't seem to be many around the perth metropolitan area. I was wondering if it is easy enough to handle by putting in the time by yourself or are lessons needed ?

Any help will be appreciated.

I have absolutely no balance but managed to learn all by myself, it just comes naturally.

Good shops in perth are:

Stand Up Paddle Sports in Osborne Park and Nedlands;

Windforce;

Westozkiteboarding.

They should be able to set you up no probs. A good place to learn is Matilda Bay in Nedlands on the sheltered side. Nice and flat and no wind.

Speaking of kooks how did your paddle go the other day Hilly? When are we goingo to be seeing you back on the water?

cheers for all the help. Have been looking through the website and other places at second hand boards so I know what to expect when I go to buy one. Anyway was also wondering where most people go if they are into catching waves a bit more than paddling on the river ?

for your size and weight, get a Naish Mana 10'
Will be easy to catch waves.
When you want to step to a more hardcore board for waves the resale value will be really good on the mana unlike some other boards.
Try the waves between North Mole freo and cott. most are pretty chilled and the reefies just off shore are easiest to learn on.

9 6 coreban performer or 10 Icon
Numerous starboards about 10 foot

Looking at about 10 foot by about 30 inches depending on your balance and if you are up for a challenge and happy to put the hard yards in. Smaller the more challenging but the rewards are that you do not need to downsize soon as you out grow the board.
