Got myself one of the carbon starboard boards, only has the star touch deck, anyone just use the star touch deck grip? Not sure if it will stay sticky. Keen to get feedback on what people have done, deck grip after a while or using wax.

I would go straight for a deck grip especially on your back foot where you put a lot of pressure. While the star touch is really good, over time (a year+) it will start to wear. If you get the deck pad from the beginning you will be able to get a good feel for your board from the get go.

Hey Dave what board did you end up getting? I have a 8'2 widepoint in carbon. The startouch was okay but I found when I put a deck grip on it I had a lot more confidence in trying to go harderand really commit. Just felt alot more comfortable underfoot also I like the spongey feeling.

I also found that when paddling out at places like middleton where you need a quick recovery after falling off (alot ) that the startouch wasnt quite cutting it in poor conditions. Where as with the deck grip I can jump straight back up and start paddling.

I have the grey flying objects deck grip which looks good with the carbon and just cut it up to fit the board perfectly. Let me know if you wanna have a crack on it to compare.

Cheers,

Bleachy.

That looks the go bleachy, might give the star touch another month or so. I got the 8.10 wide point .

Anyone use wax? (on their boards)

I see you're from SA.. Do you mostly wear booties? .. If so I think you could get by without a deck pad and keep the board light with just the Star Touch.

yeah ,I have been using wax on mine for about a year . I used a brushed carbon board with deck pads on it and didn't like the raised feeling .
Wax feels a lot more direct .
Only drawback is your paddle gets covered in wax as well .

No worries, I waxed up the nose for the state titles (didnt help much tho ) haha. And yeah the wax seems to get every where. I wasnt game enough to try a whole board waxed up only to have to clear it off again so I just ordered the deck grip. The 8'10 looks like a great board I'm sure youll put it to good use. catchya around, hopefully get a surf in mid week but the swells dropping.

Dave, I'm using wax with a back foot pad on my new Deep.
I like the feel, quite a bit more positive under-foot, particularly with booties. I find booties on grip sometimes slippery.
The board feels lighter.

I found the star touch a bit abrasive on the top of my toes and feet getting up on the board in deeper water so went for a deck pad, same as Bleachy's. Ended up being much more comfortable to stand on after a couple of hours on the board so I'm happy I got it. The FO grip was one of the cheapest and lightest too.

Hey Lano,

Petherick had startouch on his whopper in the wood construction. I think he got Leyton to take it back to the wood and reseal, now he just uses wax like a normal surfboard. I just use wax with a kick pad on my old Hokua 9'3 and it works well. Keeps you board lighter
