In between bouts of gastro, we managed to spend a couple hours out in the water off the coast of Sanya on Hainan Island. Scheduled 3 days of this including visits to the surf beach on the other side of the island as well as the secret submarine base cut into the cliff face, but spent most of our time within arms reach of the porcelain. Yeah I know, soft. Nevertheless, if you find yourself in Sanya or anywhere on Hainan, be sure to give the crew from Surfing Hainan a call.
Apparently Joe Blair spends a lot of time on Hainan so I assume it must be legit. But then again, in China, you can never tell. I once bought this awesome Rolex watch in Shanghai. Solid gold. Real diamonds. Only $25. Bargain.
Oh, one more thing... the fashion trend on Sanya beach is this cute little Hawaiian print, matching shirt and shorts. They were everywhere. I considered buying a container load to sell to all my SUP buddies on Seabreeze. Opportunity missed?

yeah, i think you might have missed there. dorky enough to be cool. i've never seen anything like it.
also, i've emailed starboard to let them know about you being on another board. i expect you'll be hearing from them. enjoy cheers
Any surfable waves on Hainan or anywhere else in China? I know that Taiwan does, but how about the Chinese mainland? Taiwan must have quite a few surfers, since Taiwan is now affiliated with the International Surfing Association.

Apparently the way Hainan works is that 5 months of the year, the east coast has good surfable waves and for another 5 months, the south coast where Sanya is situated has good surfable waves. We were only at Sanya in the wrong time of year. The guys who run the surf shop are American ex-pat lunatics who go out in storms when the coast guard won't even get in the water. Apparently there are a couple of Chinese nationals who are surfing professionally.

The other thing about these ridiculous pyjamas-on-the-beach outfits is that they were mostly worn by fat Russians who are the main tourist trade in Sanya. These people must come from Siberia or somewhere that rarely sees sun. If they weren't wearing the pyjamas, then they had budgie smugglers or thong bikinis. And not one of them had the body to carry it off. I mentioned our bout of gastro earlier. Seeing fat, pale Russians in g-bangers didn't exactly help keep the food down.
PS. I'll photoshop Starboard logos onto these Blair boards when I get the chance. Should have taken some of Connor Baxter's SIC stickers.
