It was always going to be.

Without doubt the greatest surfer to ever live. Basically able to be better than anyone else whenever he really felt like it.

It's a shame he tends to (arguably) get overscored and holds a psychological edge over the rest of the ASP.

How's The Messiah's waves in that clip? Much more exciting than Kelly's. If only people like Dane, Jordy, Owen etc could develop the consistency and competitive mentality (and were judged equally) they'd leave him in their dust IMHO.

There's an old boxing saying that goes 'you don't beat the champ on points, go have to knock him out'.

People have been saying that about Kelly for years. How would it be true when 2/3rds of the tour is owned by companies with a very large interest in their own surfers beating Kelly???

maybe its the opposite, like when Tony Hawk was scored less for the same move because the judges expected more from him.....

i can't agree with that at all. he mades just about everyone look awkward and i've seen him do that to all at stages. tricks with no connection and flow and style like he has aren't going to cut it.

i do feel sorry bede durbidge again losing a final to kelly
cheers

Well, I reckon his 10.00 in the final was overscored. And I reckon the 8.77 was too. And in the semi vs. Taj his second 8.17 was too. A stall, a minor cover-up, a couple of non-critical turns for 8.17? Maybe it was wave selection. Etc. I never really paid attention until a couple of years ago when people started talking about his consistently higher scores. They used to say he had the judges intimidated. I didn't watch anything after round 1 live, but even then each wave Kelly got the whole crowd on the beach would start cheering before he'd even done a turn. Moreso even than they did for Dylan Groves.

I agree he won, but he was still overscored. That must be intimidating as an opponent, thinking that (like CMC said) you've got to deliver a knock-out, not just match the other guy.

Go Kelly so stoked , it will take to around 2020 to see that record broken and he still might add one or two to it.

Seriously who cares if he was under or over scored....the fact is he has been doing this for 20 plus years. If he was consistently having things go his way there wd be an uproar. This has not been the case and also as CMC has said its not in the best interests of other brands for him to consistently win.

The time is now to pull yr head in and respect the fact that he is essentially one of the greatest living sports people on this planet........over and above Tiger, MJ, Lance, Layne, Maradonna,Lomu, Dan Carter, Richie McGaw etc he is an absolute legend and should be treated as such. Hats off Slater you rock!!!!!!!!!!!!

ps: he also had friendship with a certain lifeguard in the prime of her life...........that should be enough to grant him hero status anyway.

Read some other forums. These aren't my thoughts alone. People have been talking about it for years. Brands don't hold sway over the judging. It's not like each contest provides their own judges. Anyway, that's the problem with subjective sports. It's difficult to get consensus and there'll often be dissenting views.

You spelled hepatitis wrong.

Hey, I agree he's a fantastic competitive surfer, the best ever. I don't doubt he deserves his win(s). I just don't like the fawning and the occasional dubious scoring.
