If the kayaker got attacked, would the SUPer be charged, Seinfeld style, as a guilty bystander?

Not if he was a marine biologist.

Mmmm scary ... I often wonder how I would react if I saw a big shark close , while surfing .

A fella down here saw a big one a while back , his reaction was a delayed one , shakey a few hours later.
But then decided he had to face it and went back in the the next day , a bit like getting back on the bike.

I saw a 10 ft er 30 years ago , and crapped myself , i can still visualise it clear as .

We know they are always there , and we try not to think about it .

Because we are standing up paddling now , we see a lot more sea life also !!

Maybe we shouldn't talk about it ............ Sorry.

Dolphin? If its a shark and the dorsal fin is out of the water you will generally see the tail as well, where as if it's a dolphin you will only see the dorsal fin.

Based on the size of the fin it couldnt have been too big.
But that close any size is big enough

Wrong shape for a dolphin fin. Maybe it's just the tip of its fin and the tail is out of frame.

Maybe it's one of those kids with the fin on his head while he's snorkeling.

or one of these:

Thats a Pointer for sure just having a sniff. Most times you will only see the tip of the dorsal or nothing but a ripple until they dive again. Been a tuna farm diver for 12 years and this year we have had 3 times as many interactions and the tour operators are saying the same. Lots of small to mediums to go with the "submarines". Not good for the imagination when your waiting for a wave. Still i would surf every day if i could.

That's my local beach
Great White's have always been out in the ocean around here.... but not near the beach.
There has been an explosion in the seal population in the last 15 years...
from none to many thousands...

So the Great Whites have moved to the surf zone....

We have been essentially a "shark free zone" for most of my 48 years surfing here....so it's been quite an adjustment for us

if you read the captions in the "Shark Hunter's" (a GW tagging effort) sightings report
You will note 8 + 1 pictured = 9 last weekend alone
