Yep, and such in life we will keep making changes and rules to suit the lowest common denominator.

Helmets are good and there is a place for them. As there is a place for training and getting some experience before lining up with many at the start of a race.....

If you want numbers at races , you have to suit the lowest common denominatorThat board in the melon could happen to a pro just as easy as a lowest common denominator , quite a derogatory term by the way. I prefer beginner

You know husq it is that sort of comment that really pisses people off. You have to start somewhere and some people will never win a race or even get a place. What is important is that they participate and have a go.
I used to be a competitor in many sports including surfing, but I won't compete anymore because people have attitudes like yours. It seems that the only interest that some people have is to be a winner or to vouch for winners.
I would rather surf and/or paddle with "the lowest common denominator" any day than with some trumped up elitist.
The general attitude displayed in this forum is one of co-operation, helping and sharing, that is what counts.
Probably get myself in the poo. Won't be the first time.
Cheers.
ET.

Please, please, please lets not argue about this anymore. Brilliant clip. It's obvious what is right for beginners. We live in Australia however and it should always be a choice. I don't think most experienced Boppers wouldn't duck their head!! I'm not coming back to this page. I'll bet it runs 6 pages now!!!

yes everyone should have the right to do anything. First time L platers should go straight out onto the HWY solo and people that have never surfed should go buy a stand up and paddle straight out into a busy line up....whats the difference.

Seriously that was not hard to get out in if a person had done some time in the surf. But hey lets leave common sense at the door.

If you really care about the future of SUP you would see these types of events in the surf will only do more harm than good if anyone can just turn up and have a crack with no skill. More injuries will only put the cost of insurance up and the cost of events up. Wonder why some professional run events cost so much, well dont whinge about it

Im not saying no to helmets, they definitely have their place. But where does it stop, what next for beginners, chest gaurds because a broken rip or punctured lung wont be far off either.

Some good points Husq , where do you draw the line.I seen a guy the other week on a race sup surfing through a crowded Alley line up , he didnt look that competent either. i think your choice of words could have been betterAfter all we where all beginners at this caper at one stage.Maybee a beginners race on blow ups is the go , if the surf warrants it.But you need the newbies if the sport is to keep progressing at its rapid rate Supsa seem to be taking the right path with their intro,s to ocean paddling , including safety.

When I saw this video, I thought that this was madness, to organize non-pro races in waves. Looks like roman circus games for me: setting things up to maximize the risk of accidents for the "fun" of the youtube crowds. Or at least just gratuitously damage the equipment (a ploy by repair shops?)

Leave this kind of events for professionals who do not pay for their equipment and that have some experience with dangerous situations (even with a helmet). But intentionally trying to put normal people in harm's way... these are not "lowest common denominators", they are human beings, they could be your child / girlfriend / mom.
