It seems to me that SUP has mostly been embraced by over thirty's.
I don't see any groms on SUP boards.

It must be uncool [}:)]

Yer well im 16,

Dunno if use are talking about actually Paddlesurfing or just cruising around on flat water.

Well most of use talk about paddling on flat water wearing ur Crocs, ur full steamers, and then do board reviews saying that the boards are an allrounder even though u dont go out in the surf.

Ben...I'm not sure if you're referring to me with this coment..but I had a good laugh..Thanks for that..

You need to get yourself some crocs and get down here for a paddle on the Yarra with us...You're missing out....We even get the odd boat go past and make a ripple for us..

Just kidding..Myself and most of us here wish we were up there with that great weather and waves that you get..and the Meter Maids..and Warrick Capper..

Oh well..I guess we make the most of what we've got...at least we don't have Warrick Capper down here..

Seriously...I've had more waves than you've had breakfasts..Had dozens of boards made for me..Been on the Rip Curl team and had heaps of sponsors and done dozens of comps..Been mates with Jason,Robby,Pete,Mike,Dave and many other windsurfing greats.

I think I'm a pretty good judge of a board and being able to tell if it will be a good flat water board..work well in the waves or be a good allrounder..I know surfing it is the true test but it usually just confirms what I think..Sorry if that sounds cocky.

I guess it comes down to were I am in my life now..Job, family and financial restictions..and maybe a bit of..been there done that also...I've been full on for about 30 years and sup'ing (even on flat water) is a nice change for me right now.

I look forward to posting some cool sup'ing in the surf shots like you have..and I also look forward to seeing more of yours......rant over..

I think the main reason we don't see many groms is because of the high cost of the gear...I have some pics of some young'uns.

Kia Lenny rips.

I think the kids from the parents that are taking them out on there boards will be great sup'ers one day.

I'm not sure what this little girl is hanging on to..but it is a cool pic.

Who cares about the kids anyway because it looks like the girls are really into it..

how times have changed eh?

when i was 14, i couldn't stand the taste of beer, i had a crap bmx, pretended to drive my dads car and I was stone cold broke.

But i did have a black widow catapult, bag of marbles and some forgiving mates[}:)] and was as happy as a pig in sh1t.

Later on in your life, you realise that your grom years are by far the Best.......

You tell him Dj , he got owned right there ! Windy surely you could tell i was taking the piss about being 14 . Im much more stoked on life now than i was as a pimply, gangly, broken voiced grommet. I think maybe the perfect age would be about 26, and im about 10 yrs older than that. But still super stoked and nearly as fit as i was then.

I surf a spot where you sometimes get 3 generations all surfing at various parts of the break. It's really mellow and has a great vibe.

The younger girls seem to have the most fun by a long way. They hang on the inside break, usually supervised by one of the dads, and chatter away as they do.

When a wave comes they all pile on together and fall about laughing. There's always one girl or a little joffa that has the hang of it and gets some good rides.

It's best when the surf is small. If it gets too big the hot guys come out and hog all the waves.

BTW. At 51 I am as fit as I have ever been, richer, smarter, less inclined to do really dumb things. Have no need to be in constant pursuit of a root, and the toys I have now are soooo much better than 30 years ago. (kitesurfing, SUP, surfboards that work, paragliders, computers, web-enabled mobile phones, cars that work properly,...)

Despite the stir, I reckon SUP is one of the most family-friendly watersports around!

It's cheap (compared to windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, waterskiing etc).
Transporting the equipment is simple.
It's easy to start but provides a challenge to progress to waves or more efficient/faster paddling on flat water.
And it seems to be possible to put the little tacker up front and get him/her stoked from a young age.

If I had kids I'd be a SUPer.

It's a pitty im 16 not 14 aye.

So who Paddlesurfs on this forum?

Or do use rather go for a paddle on the river and have a coffee after talking about how good it was when u raced a goat-boater?

Or u rather name surf spots Thickers because u just watch the surf and have thickshakes instead of surfing.

What's your point Ben Dover? - ever since you scored your avatar you think you are some sort of authority on how we should use our boards.

So what if some of us are double your age, like to cruise on filthy city rivers at night like Tom Sawyer, create stupid fishing contraptions for our boards and take on the odd goat boarder for a race - it's all good fun. Besides, if you live in Melbourne we don't have the same surfing opportunities as you guys up on the GC - get real coffee though. I get down the surf when I can - it's at least an hours drive away, $30 in petrol, it's not as often as I would like, I get rashes on my knees, it's freaken cold - but so ****ing what - I love my life the way it is. I would never live at the GC - full of old people from Melbourne. The great thing about paddle boarding/surfing for me is that it's not one dimensional as you would have us think.

Great avatar by the way!

How does this work I can't say **** on this forum but Ramsay can say it 80 times in half an hour and can even drop the c-bomb twice on national tv

I was simply just asking who goes out in the surf on their paddleboards in a smart ass way.

Geez i know how to get use oldies psyched up aye.

Ohh and btw Brooko id rather surf on the Goldie at Snapper a world class wave than surf the maraget river in a wetty with sharks.

Not that u really have to worry about sharks on a stand up.

But i think u were referring to surfing it on a shortboard? Unless ur a charger on the stand up?

I hope i sound really cocky so u keep talking about the good surfs use have had.

I really enjoy them

yes Ben i was referring to surfing a shortboard, the thing i spend 90% of my time on. I have only been suping for 2 weeks and am into it purely for days in the surf when it is to small for my normal board. Saying that though on the odd day i wanna go river cruising with my girl, i will !

Went for a wave at Snapper this morning ... thought what a better place to get the hang of this SUP'ing thing .... a young man yelled TUG as I paddled past ... of course I decline his offer of a TUG commenting to him ... "sorry buddy, not that sort of guy" It was JUST WRONG!!!

SUP is anything but an old man sport....

So many old blokes pick up SUP thinking that it's easy and really chilled...... They are the ones giving SUP's a bad name....

If your not going to go out and charge in some solid 6ft + waves on your SUP then your not a true paddle boarder.. You should aim to surf the boards like you do any other..

If all you want to do is paddle around in the river then get a rowboat.. If you want to SUP then get out there and rip..

There are to many kooks and narrow minded short board diehards giving SUP a bad name..

Just joined, based in the UK, great forum BTW.

Good to see the Groms in Oz are as charming and eloquent as they are over here
It's always good to watch life knock the edges off them over the years (I was never like that, honest)

Have been sailing a Go200 from when they first came out and had no end of grief from the acne brigade about riding the dining table. They do seem to go quiet when you blast past them, on the pane in a light breeze whilst they are trying to waterstart something the size of skateboard.

SUP will evolve, once they get past puberty and realise that more time on the water = more fun they will quieten down. Just looking for my first SUP - waves/wind/flat water in equal measures is key for me - been recommended the SB 12'6" and Naish 11'6" any advice or comments from down under appreciated.

Cheers, Paul.

Welcome Paul...You could just use your Go board for paddling around on flat water..I paddled one not long ago and was surprized how well it went.

My recomendation is the big 11'6" Naish..it's a great first board and a bit of an allrounder..How heavy are you?..You should try and demo a few boards.

Hi DJ, thanks for the welcome.
OK here's the embarrassing stuff:
I'm 44
like to think I'm 11st but nearer 12st
5'10"
Windsurfed for eaons, surfed badly for quite a while on a longboard.
Want this board to surf, sail & paddle - I live inland now but get to the coast quite a bit and want to be in the water as much as possible.
Have 2 boys 9 & 11 both can windsurf a little and I would like them to do more, plus the 11 year old SUPed the Go around a local lake and loved it.

So, if the Naish is ok for an "old", can have a mast track and is sailable (will it plane on flat - won't be sailing in waves, not my thing) and can be paddled (again not going to race, just mooch about) then it seems it may be the board I am after.

A key deciding factor is my VW camper - don't want to overload the poptop rack so one board that is ok for all would be brilliant - I am realistic in that I will never backloop, surf 25' or paddle across the English Channel - sorry for the rambling thread, but thought the info may help. Your thoughts appreciated.
Cheers, Paul.
