SUP Australia SUP Surfing titles

This event is the qualifier for the National titles on 26-27 April at Newcastle.

Really what does this mean. Go to an Australian Titles and then what?

After watching the successful ISA run World Champs in Peru (which SUPA has no affiliation with) what is the pathway thru to further champs after SUPA having an Australian Titles. Basically in my mind thats it. The only way to get to the World Champs is thru the State and Aussie titles thru SURFING AUSTRALIA run events.
Maybe someone who is in the know could explain this.
Looking for answers to explain what a lot of people must be wondering.

Should these guys just be finding a sponsor and hosting an event rather than charging $40 dollars to compete down a proverbial dend-end road.

My issue with all this nonsense is that it's not just about a group of individuals running more SUP events. It's about vested interests trying to destroy existing state and national titles events.

It's also rather pointed that this new account holder chooses such words as "dead horse".

Why must these people attack the established events and organisations? Why not just run their SUP events, and ideally call them something other than state titles and national titles, which would prove once and for all that their intention is to be constructive instead of destructive. Does anyone from this group seriously believe that there is a long term future for two sets of state and national titles? Is this good for the sport?

I personally couldn't give a shlt who organises/runs/promotes comps and whether they have any commercial interests in doing so. I have no interest or enough skill to be competing in state or national titles - I just wanna compete in more well organised and well judged events that are supported by other average but sup stoked surfers like myself. Hey, as long as its affordable and fun I'll get involved in any comp that someone wants to put on. I've been competing in longboard comps for about 15yrs now and nobody ever questions who's running the comp' or why or where its held - we just see it advertised, enter, rock up, surf, talk shlt, have a blast then go home with great memories, a hangover, a tee shirt and look forward to next year - thats it - simple. Maybe I'm missing something - or just maybe some sup'ers are expecting too much and too busy pointing fingers rather than just getting off their ars and getting involved.

Disc: I have no affiliation with supsa/supa/surf qld or any other group - I am a surfer and have no interest in politics.

I agree who cares what they call it , its an event full stop. Gives everyone a chance to have a go.

P.s. I agree with Ali Cat and Tea Tree, the more events the better, no matter the name..

i think alot of the confusion surrounding this is because i don't think the Australian Sports Commision has sanctioned a governing body for SUP specifically yet, so at this point, can anyone call their event a state or australian title?

please correct if I am wrong, pretty hard to find information on specifics..

No, the Australian Sports Commission recognises Surfing Australia as the governing body. As far as that's concerned, the SUPA claim to be the peak body is akin to a couple of distance walkers waking up one day and deciding to split from Athletics Australia. You can't just set up a website and say you are the peak body. The other point is, the ISA will be the international body who eventually brings SUP to the Olympics. The ISA is recognised by the International Olympic Federation as the peak body for surfing internationally. The SUP world titles held last weekend is the next step in an orchestrated campaign to make SUP an Olympic sport. The ISA appreciates that surfing may not ever achieve Olympic recognition due to the logistics of holding a surfing event in proximity of the host city. However the ISA sees SUP as a very achievable goal for Olympic recognition, particularly with regard to racing. The ISA recognises Surfing Australia as the governing body for SUP in Australia. With all that in mind, it's a no brainer.

More importantly, is that Billy Watson back in the comp scene? He was just about unstoppable before he took his break.
