DJ, Oliver, check this vid out....a guy paddling on to the wake of a boat and riding it for ages. I've already thought about this....know anyone with a boat big enough to make a large wake?...He he!
Roll on summer!

I'd feel better about the whole thing it if the soundtrack was by John Buttler, Xavier Rudd, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson or someone else who has dreadlocks and carries a man-bag.

Can't see that catching on. Especially when fuel is getting so expensive and power boats drink it like crazy. Fast boats make a V8 4WD's fuel economy look good.

Ok John.. ..Next time you bring your boat over to St Kilda Oliver and I can follow you back..One on each side...That might be fun..

If you fill the hull with ballast water and set a steady 14 knots we should get a good two foot wake..

I wonder which board would work best..A Naish Glide type board or a more surfboard shape like the 11'6"..

Would be possible to SUP the wake of an oil tanker?
I have friends that live in Singapore where there is no waves but is one of the busiest port in the world.... And every kind of ship pass just in front of a watersport club where friends of mine hang out...
I told them to get out there and chase the Ships and Tanker passing by (maybe 1-2 km)
but the look at me as I was crazy!!!! maybe I'm not totally....
What do you think...

There is a fast ferry that pass by every hour or so!! it looks like is making a nice wake!!

Bye Jankie

I think it is possible to surf the wake of an oil tanker.

I've seen guys on mals surf them, they took a tinnie out there and got towed on and surfed it until their legss got sore.

I pretty sure it was in America.

Yes..That's the one..It's a must see film for those who've not seen it.

It was made by Dana Brown..He's the son of Bruce Brown..who made the Endless Summer movies.

I've thought about the tanker thing too. In summer I'll paddle out and hang around a couple of hundred metres from the edge of the shipping channel markers in Hobsons Bay. When a ship comes past, I'll try and hook up to the wake.
If it works, and it catches on, I'm sure the authorities will put some restrictions or regulations around it. They won't like groups of SUPers loitering around the channels! I can't see that many people bothering though.

Yeah..I'll be in that.

BTW...In Hawaii they have now banned SUP'ers and surfers hanging around where the supa ferry comes in because it was getting too congested and maybe a bit dangeous..I reckon they're just party-poopers..

I've hung around in the middle of Pittwater waiting for those clowns in their big 40 foot Rivieras to come powering down the bay. You can get quite a run but have to keep paddling to stay with it. Not quite surfing but a bit of a free ride back down the bay and very good fun.

I was out in the Bay in Melbourne with Dave the fireman on a glassy day when a container ship went past. They are scary big up close! We were actually in the channel and really hoping our guess of which side of the Beacon (not ours) he was going was right. The wave it kicked up was super smooth but to get close enough to surf it you would really need the brave pills.

The regs say you must keep at least 300 metres away from those big beasts.
Sound advice, I'd say! I think you're right Jonathan, they are just big lumps of water, with no crest. Maybe more fun to do the boat wake thing....
