Hey Guys

There is a chance I might be moving from Wollongong to Airlie Beach. I currently surf longboards and I SUP when its small or flat to keep me in the water. I lived in Airlie Beach about 15 years ago but wasn't really interested in surfing at that time so i never took any notice. I didn't think there was any waves around the Whitsundays but I have read a few stories about some spots. Here is an example. www.surfingatlas.com/spot/4470 Can anyone give me some info on the area surf wise. I'm not expecting much and i only need a 1-2 ft wave to glide on my SUP. I understand that MIKO is from that area and I've seen some pics of him SUP surfing. So whats the go??

Cheers

Mick

I have heard that there is surf at various places up there, although it's a closely guarded secret

I have seen some decent waves break at the entrance to
some of the inlets, BUT I have also seen some outrageous
overfalls and whirlpools due to the massive tides. I reckon
its DOOABLE on a SUP but not a prone paddler. There is
sometimes 3-5 metre swells but not too many spots that
dont have outlying coral reefs and bommies so no LONG
sweeping waves. (that anyone will tell you about.)

Might just have to sus it out if and when i get there. There is always flat water paddleing, that would be fantastic viewing the coral from a SUP. might just have to look into kite surfing or wind surfing. that will test me.
Cheers

My olds have lived in Airlie now for about 15 yrs and the old man has explored every part of the reef from the
southern tip all the way north. He used to surf a bit back in the day so he knows what to look for. Nothing
around the whitsundays or Whitehaven, great for kitesurfing though at Hill Inlet at the N end of Whitehaven.

From what he has told me and found out from old school locals is there is nothing really on offer as far as
surf goes. Apparently there are some pretty average mythical waves when the moons align, wind is EWE,
king tide etc but no-one has ever had any proof (might work 2 or 3 days a year if at all).

He has however found some pretty good waves that have never been ridden about 1500km NNE of Airlie.
Best late in our winter but probably only surfable 3 out of 7 days from what he saw.

In Airlie though over summer I've seen some pretty good sized wind swells hitting the beach in front of
their house. I'm sure if you do some exploring you could probably find a little cove or protected corner that
might offer some short period clean wind swells. I've heard a rumour that there might be one of these spots
up near Gloucester Island, not too far from the Eco resort but I can't confirm.

Cyclone whatever it's name was in around '95 I was in Townsville surfing the strand. Wind blowing its guts out onshore but really fun waves. Maybe waist to shoulder high.

Cars were lined up in the carparks watching maybe about 30 of them or so and every wave you got they were flashing their lights and beeping their horns in true bogan and proud no bullcrap Nth Qld style. I got a little barrel on one wave and they went crazy.

For extremely average waves it will always be a surf I remember. Unreal.

The local surf shop at the time used to do trips to the outer reef from the Ville also, fickle but had some great pics of waves they rode, quite a long out from there though.

Dont take many pics outin the water , probably cause i am by myself mostly but here is a couple of an average clean day, we had it like this, and bit bigger, for around a week while the high had good pressure pushing up the coast.
Sorry about the picture quality
