I've always been amazed when at sea in asia or the pacific when some guy sails past. The boat is usually a canoe with a sail made from chaff sacks or polytarp. The guy is always layed back with all the time in the world. The fact that he is miles out into the ocean doesn't matter,he has all he needs right there.
Last trip to bali I decided I wanted some of THAT.I had no idea what THAT was or if I was just full of mid life crisis bintang.I have always gravitated to third world mariners and fisho's as I have a back ground in western comercial fishing and sailing.Westerners don't generally work the ocean with the same outlook or attitude. So I figured when I got home I would see if I could make a sailing boat using a low tech rig sounded interesting.
I searched the interweb and found this guy
http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/garyd/A set of plans were purchased and away I went.
No one seemed to use the sprit rig that I'm playing with so I just made it up from pics and from memory.Astonishingly this 6x4 rectangular piece of polytarp sails to windward as well as other western boats I have sailed.
Learning that an outrigger canoe is just a canoe with an outrigger and not a catermaran was learned during testing on the farm dam.Wet wet wet.
So now I use the boat to sail down to the river mouth towing a SUP and put her up on the sand, have a surf then sail home.If the wind is on the nose or non exsistant I do what the islanders do.Start paddling.
I've worked out what THAT is after this project. It's time.
Time to get home when the water gets you there or when your paddling efforts get you there. There really is something timeless about it.
