Apologies if this has been raised before.....but I'm curious to know if there is any movement to have SUP'ing included as an Olympic discipline? I'm guessing a straight out drag race a la kayaking would be the go as that way there wouldn't be any drafting involved, there would be lanes and 1 person to a lane. In saying that though there could be an open water event held with the yacht regatta. Seems like a pretty seamless integration to me and an opportunity to highlight and showcase the fastest growing watersport in the world. It is certainly a sport with a participation factor numbering no doubt in the many hundreds of thousands around the world so it seems to meet all the criteria for inclusion.....

I reckon down the white water course.... but seriously it could easily fit into the rowing regatta , flat water sprints , no need for another venue. Then as the sport progresses move it to the ocean. It would almost be impossible to get in , outrigger/surfing ect have been trying for many years.

In regards to outriggers, look at the size of the craft (logistics) and also the participants at a worldwide level.....not that many I'm guessing
Re surfing, not all venues that hold the Olympics have a suitable spot for Surfing....Montreal, Moscow and Munich (just to name 3) so that makes it hard to gain entry.

ISA has it about right - Marathon distance and Technical (BOP) races could easily be included in Olympics and that's what they are aiming for. Sure you'd prefer waves for a BOP race but half the time Huey doesn't provide a decent swell even on a renowned surf break.

Maybe not quite all the criteria:

"Only sports that adopt and implement the World Anti-Doping Code
can be included or remain in the programme."

This is not exactly true. The logistics is minimal.

Many of these events like sailboarding for example race on one design. They are measured to be identical. I seen the boards for England.

V1 outrigger is on the way to the olympics already. I don't know the timing but AOCRA is already preparing clubs and junior programs for it. You just show up, the equipment is there and you race, the winner wins based upon ability not equipment advantage.

Surfing is a hard one for the olympics as it's purely subjective judging. If you compare it to say Gymnastics there are firm forms and standards to comply to and be judged upon.

Here's the 2020 considerations. That's a lot of sports already in front.

All three competitive disciplines for climbing-bouldering, lead, and speed-will be proposed for inclusion into the Games. The other sports up for consideration include baseball, karate, roller sports, softball, squash, wakeboard, and Wushu. Baseball and softwall were dropped from the Olympic line-up in 2008 and are now trying to get back on the list. There were initially 12 sports, but four were dropped: surfing, dancing, bowling, and netball. So surfing was in there.

More about it here:-

Wushu looks like a cross a cross between a break dance battle and a sword fight. Surely Sup could pinch this spot.

I can tell you all that after competing in the ISA Games in peru this year and seeing some of what the olympic committee thought about sup racing, SUP racing has got a very high chance of jumping that waiting line and getting front of all those other sports.

They loved it and cos SUP racing can be done anywhere, you just need water.

So i wouldn't be surprised if we find sup racing apart of the olympics but when is the question really.

I couldn't imagine anything more greater for an athlete then respresting their country at the olympic games! WOW so cool

Chris
you wont find V1's at the Olympics. Not enough countries do it now for it to even rate a mention. especially when The OIC is looking all the time at getting rid of sports or events in sports, eg KAYAKING.
AOCRA is just wasting money on V1's....

But The Duke did!

I think SUP racing is a no brainer for The Olympics. It just takes time. Entry requirements, etc. I think the main thing is estimated participation levels on a world wide scale...
