G'day,
I've been SUPing just this year. I started before winter and paddled right through it in a wetty. There's got to be something better than a wetty to wear surely. Any ideas for next winter?

FYI, I've just found this brand based in Sydney, Vaikobi ( www.vaikobi.com/pages/product-shop ). They have paddle specific gear which includes a winter and summer range. I might try them in winter 2015.

Is/Was there anything else available as afar as what to wear in winter for SUPing (mainly touring and racing)?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi mate,

we we paddled pretty much straight through winter here and I cannot talk highly enough of the STAYWARM range from VIRUS. for here I wore the long sleeve compression top and pants with a pair of shorts over the top and one of their beanies and I was good to go (booties and gloves when it is -5). I also have a friend in Newcastle who used it through winter up there and rates it very highly also. They have recently signed some awesome SUP and Prone paddlers. Their summer range (STAYCOOL) is awesome and it doesn't retain any funky smells. Check out my review www.thesupingcaveman.com/blog/review-virus-action-sport-performance-apparel/5/12/2014
check out their gear at virusintl.com.au. I was so impressed with it all that I am a now a reseller for them and can help out a little with the price.

I recommend the 2xU range of thermal compression gear. Ask John Engel, he seems to be the local Sydney expert on tights.

The ION Jacket Zeusman put up is great for after paddling. It is a little bulky for paddling. I had it on over a wetsuit top last weekend between heats at the SPSC event and it kept me toasty warm.

In winter I use the Adrenalin Thermo shields. They're available as pants, short sleeve or long sleeve tops and they come in a variety of colours. The yellow is great for off shore down winding.
If you look at most of DJs downwind vids he's usually wearing one. They're warm and don't seem to hold water.

PT Woody wears tights in winter in Vic but we're about attracting people to the sport up here rather than scaring them away. You can pretty much paddle in board shorts all year round in Sydney.

Adrenaline tops are great. One small problem with the pants (tights) is they have the stirrup feet which is not so great for SUP IMO.

I have the Vaikobi V Cold short sleeve, tank top and boardies. Very comfortable gear. Keeps me nice and warm in winter, doesn't hold water and breathes well so you don't overheat.
Their V Hot(summer) lightweight paddle tees are really nice too. Well worth a look.

for economy & functionality: boardshorts, high neck slick/rashvest, snug impact vest. if you're nsw then we're colder here in ct, sunny south africa -
& our water is def colder @ 11^C.
a beanie/hoody also helps imo.

i've loved wearing a core dry hoodie from Victory and available thru breezer purple beenie. wont replace a wettie in winter if your going to get wet but keeps you warm for cruising around. in summer it's replaced my rashie. heaps good.

Hi. I have been wearing Victory koredry hoodies for the last 2 years. These tops are light weight, repel water, keep the wind chill at bay , and provide 50 UPF.
I haven't had any problem with skin cancer, but i know a lot of people who have. the koredry hoodie wont replace a wetsuit in winter, but it may prolong your time in boardies.

Yep there sure is.

Standard paddling attire in summer is board shorts and short sleeve rashie if you desire.

Winter is board shorts and long sleeve rashie.

Gotta luv it in Noosa.

This thing serves me well during the winter. Wear a rashie underneath and it's comfy and warm. Paddling on Sydney harbour on a cold morning was perfect.

A rashie... In Noosa... Why? Loved SUPing up there last June in boardies. Was so warm. :)

Down in Melbourne I generally SUP in Boardies and sunscreen in summer and a wettie in winter (once the water really cools down so around July).

Mind you for flat water I'll do boardies and a Wetsuit vest in winter too.
