Quick Update (1st race Sept 17):

- online entries now available (sorry for delay)

- The first race will be on Saturday the 17th of September at Dee Why. It will be around 6-7km long. Really interesting course. The course will adjusted according to wind direction.

- There is a surf expo at this race which will include just about anything related to paddling - surf skis, paddles, OCs and of course SUP.

- STARBOARD will have a tent at the expo. Rod is bringing down the Starboard trailer so plenty of surf sups and race sups to try out. Sam will also be bringing his demo Starboards which include the 14ft Ace race boards. These things are amazing. Can't believe how quick they are downwind!

- I suggest you register for the series rather than the race due to the package deal. $200 gets you a series prize and entry into the draw for a carbon paddle. Do 3 races including the 20 Beaches and go into a the draw for a trip to Perth to do the Doctor Race AND get a Starboard 12'6 Race Board to do it on. Given I don't expect huge numbers for the first SUP 20 Beaches, your odds are pretty good.

- If you do not yet have a raceboard, give Sam a call at windsurfnsnow. He can arrange something on a first in / best dressed basis.

- Let me know if you have any questions.

Seems like a good crew is planning to do the race which is great. The forecast is looking good. Sunny and warm. Should be a nice DW run from Longy to Curl Curl with about a 2km paddle along the cliffs to the finish. All up, about 6-7km.

If you haven't entered for the series, on-line entries close tomorrow (Thurs) night. There are only about 6 pre-entered for the series at this stage so pretty good odds to win the Carbon Starboard paddle which will be drawn on Saturday. Also, alot cheaper to enter series than each race.

There is over $10,000 in prizes for this series so pretty good chance you will easily get your $200 series pass back.

BTW - PFDs are required which is a pain in the arse but most of the ocean races now require them. Believe me, I have fought this thing for years but having now raced plenty of times with them on it is not as bad as I thought it would be. Dean Gardiner at OceanPaddler has good ones at a reasonable price and really looks after the local SUP crew. He is at Manly - oceanpaddler.com/contact-us/

The Bum bag style PFD's are Type 1 & therefore should be ok as Type 1 are higher than the type 3 style?
http://www.ultrapfd.com.au/default.asp?PageID=46

However would be good to get confirmation from Deanno about this?

It looks like Type 3 is a just waterski jacket/impact vest, Type 1 is the full on life preserver:

(a) PFD Type 1s were previously referred to as 'life jackets': however, this term is more correctly applied to the type of lifesaving equipment carried on ships and other commercial vessels.

PFD Type 1. PFD Type I complying with the requirements of AS 1512 provides a high level of buoyancy and is designed to maintain the wearer in a safe floating position, ie. with the body inclined backwards from the vertical with the nose and mouth clear of the water. The bulk of the PFD Type I plus the fact that a buoyant collar is often incorporated can make it awkward to move about freely or swim for any distance while wearing one. They are generally recommended for use in pleasure boats which may venture beyond sheltered waters or where the wearer is at risk of sustaining injuries which may impede the wearer's ability to swim, such as in power boat racing.

(b) PFD Type 2s were previously known as 'buoyancy vests'.

PFD Type 2. A PFD Type 2 complying with the requirements of AS 1499 provides sufficient buoyancy to assist the wearer to maintain his or her head above the water but not as much as a PFD Type 1. It is less bulky than a PFD Type 1 making it more suitable for applications where the wearer needs to move around or swim. A PFD Type 2 is generally recommended for use by dinghy sailors, board sailors, water skiers and other people who are at risk of short term immersion in sheltered waters and therefore need to wear a PFD for an extended period of time.

Some PFD Type 2s are designed for specific purposes such as canoeing or board sailing and therefore include additional features to suit the application.

(c) PFD Type 3s were previously known as "Buoyancy Garments".

PFD Type 3. A PFD Type 3 complying with the requirements of AS 2260 provides a similar amount of buoyancy to that of a PFD Type 2, but PFD Type 3s are permitted to carry a wider range of colours than just the high visibility colours permitted for PFD Types 1 and 2. This lends itself to a wider range of styles amongst PFD Type 3s including buoyant and wetsuits and PFD's in fashion colours.
PFD Type 3s are generally recommended for use by water skiers and other people who are at risk of short-term immersion in sheltered waters where assistance is immediately on hand.

Ha ha, heckling Dan, goes back to our Mtn Bike days and glove size.

It's a Jet Pilot impact vest - Type 3 - so might not be suitable unfortunately - from reading your post.

Guys - re the PFD thing - the way to go is getting one that doubles as a camel back. I have one and it is great.
Dean Gardiner currently has these in stock at his shop if you want to get one.
He will give SUP paddlers doing Saturday's race a discounted price.
Just give him a call on 0427 171 403 so he can pass on your name to Yanda at shop for a discount when you pick it up. See ya Saturday.

PFD pick up anybody? I am picking up one (from Dean Gardiner's Oceanpaddler) for big Pete Meyer tomorrow and taking it the race so if anyone else wants to take advantage of this free service let me know. You just need to call them and pay for it over the phone first. Hey, Saturday is looking like a cracker of day....D
Casso - have you decided to go with the 12 or 14?
Unfortunately, the fields in both are red hot! Andy reckons he can do everyone on his flashy new Naish 12'6 carbon job. And Sam has taken back ownership of the Starby 14x25. Pete Morgan has got his hands on the SIC Bullet while big Pete M is wondering what all the fuss is about as he puts his trust in his old faithful Naish 17. And the wild card in the pack is Stevie Morrisson - if he turns up with something moderately fast, the mild conditions will suit him. Should be good....

Great event today. Really nice conditions with little bumps and backwashes to push us all around the 8km course.

A quality crew of 16 took on the course. Thanks to all those who supported this inaugral race of the Sydney Oceanseries.

Next race is the Lion Island Challenge on 8 October starting at 8.30 - see: http://online.oceanseries.com.au/pages/oceanseries-events/lion-island-challenge.php

Unofficial Results:

Andy Davies (Naish 14 Javelin)
Sam Parker (Starboard Ace 14)
Dave Kissane (Starboard 12'6)
Pete Myer (Naish 17)
Steve Morrisson (SIC 12'6)
Pete Morgan (SIC Bullet 17)
Casso (Deep 14)

Terrene Black (riding for C4) won the girls.

Sorry not sure of the the rest after this.

Hopefully some photos to follow.
Thanks to Starboard and Windsurfnsnow for supporting the series and providing the awesome prizes.
