I am with you DJ, for any of the Sup events not to include a "Master division" is somewhat disappointing, in all other competitions, this is included and the denial of such is shortsighted, may I suggest that this age bracket makes up a large percentage of people actually buying Sups, it is only a matter of time, discrimination is one word that comes to mind, hopefully soon the SUP events will " come of age". and be a true representation of all Suppers.

Hi Jodie,
its an up and back course with just one pole to go around so I'm hopeful I can get this one right and we'll have Fireman Dave to follow he's been in great form of late on his 18'er ,
this was the first flatwater event I did a few years ago and has a great vibe to the event for everybody beginners and advanced,

Cheers.

Ok guys, I hear you.

There will be a Master's division in the remaining RPS/Starboard races this season.

We need to recognise that we [ actually I'm still 18 months away until I make the grade] can't cut it against the young bucks! But geez, it's fun trying to though.

Apologies in advance, but I'll be in Japan laying some fresh tracks the day of the race. Pity, as this is a fun event.

Jamie Mitchell at SHQ Cruise to the Cerberus
Indisputably, the world's greatest ocean paddler. One of the world's elite ocean athletes comes to Visit SHQ Cruise to the Cerberus.

At this stage we are not sure if Jamie will come for a paddle or just for a visit. We will keep you posted.

World Champion ocean paddler, big wave rider, international swell chaser, all-round waterman - no one label adequately describes Jamie Mitchell and that's just how he likes it.

At the top of Jamie's list of achievements proudly sits his eight consecutive Molokai to Oahu Ocean paddling championships. Raced over 32 grueling miles in the postcard perfect waters of Hawaii competitors are pushed to their physical and mental limits and beyond by surging swells, scorching sun, wind and some of the strongest currents on the planet. To simply finish this event is in itself an achievement. To dominate as Jamie has is incredible. Since 2002, Jamie has won virtually every major paddleboard race he has entered.

A fearless Big Wave surfer Jamie has also been honored by invitations to some of the world's elite big wave riding events including the Tow-in World Cup and the Mavericks Paddle-in contest. In 2007 Jamie was nominated in Billabong's XXL Big Wave Awards, for a huge wave ridden at Todos Santos, Mexico.

Never one to limit his opportunities to experience everything the ocean has to offer Jamie has adapted to almost every form of wave-riding craft from Tow-in to Standup Paddleboards, Foilboards, Canoe surfing, and shortboards. A qualified and experienced lifeguard. Mitchell's exploits have also earnt him membership of the informal, but esteemed 30/20 Club, of elite watermen who have paddled 30 miles or more through open ocean, and ridden 20 foot waves by the traditional paddle-in method.

A relentless adventurer, Jamie continues to chase big waves and uncover new surf spots around the world, equipped and ready to do what it takes to meet the next epic swell face on. Having dominated ocean paddling races throughout the world for the best part of a decade, Jamie has earnt a unique, international standing as an elite ocean athlete. World surfing champions like Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning, Ironmen like Trevor Hendy, and Hawaiian surfing greats like Brian Keaulana are united in their respect and admiration for Mitchell's skills and achievements.

Just a stab in the dark here but it could be because we don't have any surf beaches within 90 minutes drive of the city. Plenty of flat water though.

PS, personally, almost everytime I go for a distance paddle, I end up chasing waves. It is just too tempting to go surfing up here in Sydney!

We ran some twilight harbor paddles last summer and had about 6 people show up!

More Sydney crew are doing it now but most of the crew I know would prefer to surf. Unless of course its blowing 25 knots, then its downwind time!!

Update:

With Jamie Mitchell coming down and in response to the very successful Flood Relief Paddle Marathon organized by Jamie, his brother Justin and especially Paul Jackson from ROAR Industries, we have decided to also raise some much needed funds for the disaster in Queensland. (although on a much smaller scale, respect Jacko !)

1. We will be kindly asking all competitors to make a small donation when signing up.

2 . Andrew Allen from Fluid Distribution Australia (Quickblade & PSH) has kindly donated a top of the line Quickblade Elite Race Paddle (arguably the best race paddle on the market) to be raffled at the end of the comp by SUP VIC. All proceeds will be going to flood relief.

All other prizes donated by our sponsors Coreban, Naish, PSH, Cabrinha, GSI, Kialoa, Quickblade, Futures, Creatures, FCS and Balin, will be given away by lucky draw.

Wow, it could get interesting tomorrow with entries from Jamie, Jacko, Dave, Cam and possibly Woogie. And don't rule out Matt Lumley he has won this race a few times already.

However please don't forget The Cerberus Race is still mainly a social SUP gathering for all level's of paddlers.

PTWoody said...

Sensational news from Portsea this afternoon as Australia's fastest Stand Up Paddler Queenslander Paul 'Jacko' Jackson was bested by Peninsula reigning champ Dave Hunt from Victoria. The other local favourite Cam Hosking came in third, but was disadvantaged by a late start to the race.

This result sets up a fascinating grudge match tomorrow at the SHQ Race to the Cerberus. No doubt both Jacko and Cam will be out to make amends, while Dave will be eager to notch up his first Cerberus win on his home break.

The Sunshine Coast's Woogie Marsh had to sit today's race out with a virus. Meanwhile, international paddling champ and race ambassador Jamie Mitchell cruised around the back of the field offering tips and advice to all paddlers. Hopefully both Woogie and Jamie will be fit and in race mode tomorrow morning at Sandringham, as we may well witness an epic battle over the 5.3km course.

Had a great day. The water was a bit 'sticky' as Jamie put it, which certainly kept newbs like me on our feet (or off as the case may be).

Can I say thanks to Woogie, Matt, Jamie, Jacko, Matt & Cam for their generosity in the Paddling clinics. About a dozen+ of us enjoyed some valuable instruction, and all those mentioned, and others (Simondo!) were eager to help us improve our techniques. Fantastic stuff!

This is why I love SUP. The spirit of generosity, the friendly and unpretentious paddlers and the great energy whenever we get together.

To have elite sportsmen giving their time and essentially giving us one-on-one tuition is to be applauded. Other sports could well take a page out of the SUP book.

Well done, and thanks guys.

So right.l'm pretty new to the sport myself.Have been involved in other sports and always felt rather out of place/intimidated by approaching elite athletes. These guys were so available, not only in the clinic as well as throughout the day.Special thanks to Woogie who battled through a bit crook.l have heard Jamie could be the new Laird.Whilst Laird moves over for no man,Jamie certainly desesrves to be right there alongside IMHO.Thanks also to the great support of SHQ and all involved.
ps. would they possibly accept a further donation of $28 for the flood relief victims if l call up tommorow
