Everyone is invited to come and compete in Victoria's first stand alone SUP Championships - Does not matter which state you come from!
There'll be a race from Bells to Cosy Corner, Jan Juc to Cosy for the women and the surf event happens around Pt Danger which has numerous breaks and generally there's a decent wave somewhere around Pt Danger...even on small days!

Note also, plans are in progress for a SUP World Tour event in Victoria later this year....we will keep you updated on that one!

Didn't even know about this race til now. Same dates as Perth Doctor race.

Why are they starting the races at 8:00 in the morning thou? Very early

more likely to be less wind......the wind this time of year is more likely to be in your face or side on

We hardly ever get waves like this.....most of the time its onshore 2 foot dribble stay home ro go to Qld with everyone else....hahahahaha

Might be better at Point Roadknight[}:)]

I don't get why the surfing starts at 10.00am???? Seems like it would make more sense to get it started early before the wind gets up, hold the race later when the wind is up and make it a down wind race.
Is there an alternative spot if its crap on the day????

May be paddling the opposite direction?.....from Cosy Corner to Bells is more likely to be a down winder this time of year........have a look at next weeks Sea Breeze graph for example.........But then...these east winds can produce very large peaky seas......

A south west required for a down winder is as rare as hens teeth this time of year....but then....stranger things have happened.
And a south west wind often comes with a fair bit of swell, so a sea will be very peaky once again.

On this coast where do you go in summer?.......it's just that time of year surfers know reasonable surf can be rare or non existant for long periods.
& down wind racing conditions here don't exist with any reliability.

I ask the question....what is the idea behind holding a comp now?

Would the obvious answer be for sponsors to get commercial exposure with all the tourists around?
It certainly isn't aimed at getting good waves for surfers.......its a shame the dollar has to rule.

If organizers held it in a few months time.....autumn for instance, waves will start to turn on, & winds more favorable......quite often none.....better for a race from Bells to cosy.
It would attract more compeditors, tourists are still around then, it would be more likely to give them an event worth watching, instead of a bunch of turkeys floping around in rough sea.
But as I said before.....stranger things have happened.....so cross your fingers

Sounds like you're onto it, I haven't entered cos I'm thinking it's gunna be a waste of money, I'm waiting to last minute to see the long range forcast before I waste an entry fee

SUP Judging Criteria: 2011


“A surfer must perform radical controlled manoeuvres, using the paddle as a key tool, in the critical sections of a wave with speed, power and flow to maximize scoring potential.
Innovative / progressive surfing as well as variety of repertoire [manoeuvres], and the functional use of the paddle to increase the intensity of the manoeuvres, will all be taken into account when awarding points for SUP surfing.
The SUP surfer who executes these criteria with the maximum degree of difficulty and commitment on the waves will be rewarded with the higher scores.”
SUP Scoring Guidelines


1. The judging scale will be the normal 10 point scale with normal ISA/SA contest rules applying.

2. The aggregate of the best 2 rides will decide the final score for each surfer and interferences will be adjudicated according to the ISA/SA Surfing Rulebook.

3. The surfer must have forward momentum under the wave generated power to be deemed a scoring ride.

4. To the best of a riders’ ability he/she is expected to stand up on the board at all times throughout the heat, unless the situation of safety dictates otherwise. How-ever this will not have a bearing on any of the scoring.

5. Entry into the wave should be by paddling in the standing position to enable the maximum score.

6. Footwork, nose riding and flow points will be scored, but this will be done in their relationship to the criteria and degree of difficulty and critical nature of board positioning.

7. In some cases, and specialty events beach starts can be used as an alternative method to start a heat, under the consultation of the Contest Director and Head judge.

8. The paddle is used in turns as a brace, a pivot, and a force multiplier. A surfer will be scored higher when he uses the paddle in some or all of these three ways to achieve sharper or more powerful turns.

9. Use of the paddle on the inside rail or the outside rail will have no difference on the degree of difficulty of the manoeuvre.

10. Tricks such as twirling or otherwise using the paddle in a non-functional manner will earn no extra score for the surfer.



Officials Responsibility

As SUP is a new discipline of surfing in terms of competition.
It is the responsibility of every Contest Director and Judge to promote the above ideas and criteria, to ensure all competitors develop a standard approach and understanding of what is expected from an elite performer in SUP.
SUP surfing is unique and can be done many ways but, for competition it is important to set the criteria and scoring guidelines that will set the SUP discipline apart from established long boarding.
When the discipline of SUP surfing began it was common to see longboarders catching the wave using the paddle, then not using the paddle in any practical way to enhance their performance. Often the paddle was just “held”.
The paddle is a tool and a big part of the sport therefore it is not just used to help catch a wave, but is necessary as a functional tool “aid” for riding the waves.
