There are a few groms around starting to rip.

There was a kid, maybe 12y.o. on the peninsula the other day killing it.
A few times I thought he might be putting others in danger but when I saw
him from the front of the wave I realised he was in total control.

The next generation are going to rip but I hope they put time in on a shorty
as I think its a big help. Wish I did.

Yeah I used to stress with my other 3 when they wouldn't get off the lids as little kids. Eventually they took to the shorties though.

I used to think the same thing with Robbie with the SUP (although he does ride his shortie still) but he loves it. He never had the same stoke on the SB as was always too wrapped up in team sports. So now I'm just happy he is out in the water.

I reckon the it's the whole elitist SB thing with dad's and their kids that kills it for some. As long as they're in the water who cares, plus why is a SB a more valid craft anyways?

I don't think SB's are necessarily any more or less valid, I just think it really helps style,
weight distribution etc. Teach the kids how to really put it on rail!

Brendan, I was mainly responding to Lacey's call that kids should be on shorties. It's all about the fun for kids as far as I am concerned which is why so few are doing it (surfing SBs) these days - in Sydney anyways. Too crowded at the regular spots, our last 4 surfs here have been with no one else - only possible on a SUP most of the time.

goatie, i was only thinking of the reasons that bnaccas has just stated.

mix the whole lot up i reckon and have fun. but if a kid has ambitions, i still think some sb ing experience up to a certain age is valid regardless of how many red thumbs i get for not toeing the general short sighted sup line of thinking
cheers

Hey Phil, have you seen Dean Snow's 14 year old on a SUP? He pushes his old man to the limits. I reckon the kid could ride a Coolite better than some of the guys on the tour. Pity they're not into competitions, otherwise you would all be saying what the? It's funny that in QLD watersports are held in regard like contact sports football e.g AFL, Rugby League and Union etc. Down South, whilst still competitive ( a La Wayne Lynch) surfing is considered an artform/lifestyle that isn't sullied any where near as much by aggressive unnecessary competitive behaviour. Being 90 kg and 185 cm I was always a big bloke as a shortboarder. I was one of the first people to surf the shelf at PT. Cartwright. Kong looked up to me not for my surfing, but my aggro and AFL ability. The world is a funny place and in the end it matters diddly squat what a bunch of old has beens, on stand up Kayaks/bloated mals with taped up broomsticks (look out Voldemort) consider "The best". The best Supper, Shortboarder, Maladjusted longboarder, Booger or Kneegroveller in the world is the person that is having the most fun. Cheers to you all.
PS.don't drop in on me or snake me over 4 ft or I'll show you a few tricks that I learned playing Water Polo.

The modern shortboard does'nt allow foot work at all, this I belive inhibits the development of individuality in ones style. It also trains the surfer to stay put so transfering to larger craft is dificult.I still ride shorties from time to time but get bored very quickly. The modern Mal's give you manouverability and the ability to move around and SUP's are just the next step in my personal evolution.Never in my life have I enjoyed paddling back out so much or paddling for a wave either,SUPing in good conditions for me has become a very complete experience that because of the consentration needed is almost like a meditative state. So OM to you bro.

,

I know Dean, Jarrod and Adam all 3 rip on home grown SUPS and Kites. Dean would be a serious contender for King Mabo or Carona if he decided to turn up. You could even up the anti to tow in, foil boarding, gyrocopers, hangliding, board shaping, boat building and Yoda would still do well.
