hi all
just wondering if any of you guys are SUPing with a knee replacement?
My knees are shot, don't need a replacement yet but it will happen at some point.
I'm thinking it could be quite tricky getting to a stand up position from the kneeling on board. As lack of knee bend seems to be a problem, as well as weight bearing on knee.
Any thoughts or experience to share.
Cheers
I've not had a knee replacement, but 2 knee recos and microfracture surgery due to bone on bone from playing footy. Starting supping last year and so far so good. If you can pop from knees to standing using your upper body you should be ok. I get occasional aches still in the knee and some swelling but that would be more likely from stepping off the end of wave into shallow water and landing on my feet. I try to fall off the back of a wave now to protect my knees from any shocks through it like this.
Lack of bend and weight bearing is prob not going to help balance though on the board, so something super floaty and not tippy at all would be best as I definitely favoured 1 leg more than the other at first, however feel my leg strength has now evened out.
Prob best to try borrow someone's big volume board and have a
go in flat water a few times to test your knee.
I had both knees replaced last December. After doing plenty of rehab I was back in the lineup at Easter. I'm 57, 105 kgs and ride a 9' 5' Allwave. I told my surgeon I wanted to surf and he made the incisions to the side a little. The trick is to practice kneeling, first on pillows, then a yoga mat. I'm now barely conscious of my new knees and pain free.
No new knees yet, but I do have one hip replaced, the other one is shot and will be replaced in six months, and I have a disc taken out of my back. I am sure that you will have no problem surfing once you are up, and pretty sure that you will find a way to get to your feet. In my case, getting to my feet is not fast or pretty, but it reliably works. I use my paddle as a crutch to help me up through the awkward part where things don't bend enough. From the many people I know who have new knees, there is the possibility that you may not be able to kneel on the board sitting all the way down on your heals (though some can with a lot of rehab work), I don't think that will keep you from being able to go from being on all fours up to your feet. I am sure you will figure out a way. If you want to be sure, just get on the floor now, pretend that your bad knee will not flex all the way, and now figure out a way to go from all fours to standing, using the paddle as an aid if you need to. Getting old and busted up is no reason to stop, but it can involve some creativity.
Thanks for input guys.
Yeah its it's a bummer getting old, bonus is I've done a lot off stuff to wear the knees out ??
Hoping to get a few more years yet, but it will happen at some point.
Hearing your stories is really encouraging, last time I saw consultant he said I would struggle to kneel with a TKR , but you have made me feel a lot more positive about the future.
Cheers ??
