A guy on the Zone has just asked this... www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=1873.0

"Question to all, but maybe more to the aussies.
used to live in Sydney from 99 to 03, traveled around a fair bit, but never made it to WA. i'm now thinking of going to WA, around Margaret river from Jan onwards. any info on the conditions for doing downwinders there ? i of course know about the "doctor", how strong and regularly does he blow ? is it always cross shore ? any other particularities and info would be great .
is there any sort of "downwind" scene in that area ? thanks for your your help guys".

Does anyone have a comment?

Hmmm so whats the question? Sounds like he answered it himself?
From January onwards there is usually a seabreeze which blows anywhere from south to south west.
Doing downwinders along the Margaret River stretch of coast would be a mission in itself. In that area you cant just drive along the coast and park your car. The main road runs a few kilometres inland. There are only a few sealed roads that take you to the beach. In between its either gravel or sand tracks which need 4wds.
Not sure if people who live down there would be into downwinders?
If I lived down there Id be SUP surfing the few protected point breaks from the seabreeze. But then again if it was me Id be windsurfing mainbreak in a seabreeze.
But thats my thoughts on the downwinder side of things.
Maybe contact Courtney? He rides JL's. Someone may have his contact details?
Kitersi, Windy Miller or Hilly ride JL's and most likely have his details?
Other than that maybe just start a new topic calling for Margaret River SUPers?
Sorry I couldnt help much more than that...

Thanks..I would have thought anywhere that has side shore wind would be ok for down-winders.

Maybe he's asking if there's locals doing it?

I reckon his better off looking into the erea around Geograph Bay up the Dunsborough erea of the cape, as greeny said access could be a problem for pick ups and drop offs and what not, although Hamelin Bay could be worth a look in a southerly from the boatramp to contos or redgate, getting a sup out of contos would be a mission

There's a beautiful stretch of coast between the tip of Cape Naturaliste and North back to Busselton. The prevailing winds are usually the SW seabreeze and the morning E. Both are blocked by land so it's more of a "no-winder" then "down-winder". Occasionally one gets a NW and sometimes a swell but its well-protected and quite spectacular, past small housing sub-divisions, rocky outcrops, national park, on-and-offshore reefs. If the wind isn't SW or E, then it usually means a storm and one would not be SUP anyway. I have seen a few SUP in the area not to mention heaps of kayakers.

Cheers.

If you want a short down winder with 3 or 4 breaks on the way depending on swell then do what kiters do and go from the boat ramp to surfers point. The breaks are boat ramps, bombie, south sides and mainbreak.

But if your looking at a more challenging distance go from gas bay to surfers point. In summer you will have the breeze at your back from mid morning onwards.

I'm sure the guy's from supsurf Australia would get together regular. I think the photo's on their website are from surfing the bombie, could be mistaken so many breaks down there

Does anyone know if Dave Sheene is still windsurfing or into SUP?

Its probably just mainbreak? In the photos there are surfers sitting on their boards. I didnt think that the bombie broke like that for regular surfing? More a tow in wave? Just my thoughts. Anyone else know?
