Why can't these be the state titles for what they are? They are running different events to surfing Australia and the line I got at least from surfing WA is that their charter points them towards surfing so that's what they will be putting their efforts into. We all know SUP is about more than just surfing or just DW'ING or just flat water so as far as I'm concerned if one governing body is going to overlook a major component of our sport why shouldn't or can't someone else stand up and represent that area of the sport?

No you can't go to ISA games but I think and I might be out of line here but other than BOP the next closest style of SUP that will get you to representing your country is through flat water sprints when it becomes an Olympic event. You only have to look at events like the silver blade regatta in the US to see how big flat water racing can be. And who knows what SUPA might lead to in terms of winning state/nationals, I think a bit more clarification is needed on that rather than here you go your national champ and that's it.

As for the reference to Olympics, if and when that opportunity arises, once again, Surfing Australia would be the government sanctioned national body overseeing selection, just as they do for ISA.

I'm just going on what I've been told from surfing wa and they are focused a lot more on surfing, so much so they aren't even running the 20km marathon at the upcoming WA state titles, which is an ISA event. Does that mean hypothetically someone from WA can't represent Australia at the ISA games or even get to the nationals as we have no qualifiers?

I think SUPA have every right to call this their state titles as they are an Austrailian organization, just because it won't get you to the ISA games doesn't mean it has no validity, the only reason that surfing Australia have that connection is that they've been taking surfers, longboarders and body boarders to this event since it began so of course they would take stand up on board, which is awesome.
Look at the world championship events this year, there are three different organizations claiming to be running one, can you tell me who won the ISA surfing last year and is that person the world surfing champ or is Kelly Slater through the ASP, no disrespect to any, but all organizations can call their event what they want.
In my opinion the two UNOFFICAL world championship event are Molokai for distance and California BOP for short course

Kelly, with respect, what you have to ask yourself is, what's in the best interests of SUP? To have multiple state titles? To confuse the market place?

And if SUPA was being completely honest, would they prefer that Surfing Australia events were eliminated by their own efforts to stage similarly named events, thereby giving themselves unlimited priority and status?

The point is, why create a series of SUP events designed and intended to destroy another existing series of SUP events? We all agree that it's great that we have more quality events to attend and compete. But when they are intended to cannibalise each other, that cannot be in the best interests of the sport.

Simple solution - run the SUPA events but call them something else. It's just not that hard. A little creativity goes a long way.

Who cares , im going no matter what they call it. Why not have the two organizations fighting it out , the one thats willing to invest the most in SUP will come out the winner. Game On

The only title that will stick in people's mind is the one fought out by the best athletes on the same day.

ISA and ASP are two different beasts with different structure and business orientation and as such the top athletes end up going where the money is.
It is just the same with everything, you have amateurs and pros. You can have an amateur title and a pro title if you want but the general public will only care/remember about one. Every sports is the same...

I don't know the line-up of this week-end but considering the crop we had last week-end for the Supsa DW (bar Kelly and Peasy), it was close to be a full spec Aussie title...

There is SUP Australia, a "stand up paddle" association.

Is Surfing Australia involved in SUP because they think there is money in it for them? If there was money in kite-surfing and windsurfing, would Surfing Australia also want to be the controller of those competitions as well? Where does it stop?

And should SUP Australia start running longboard or shortboard surfing competitions?

It's pretty simple, from the way I see it. A stand up paddle association for stand up paddle.

If anyone wants to run sup competitions, great. I don't see SUP Australia saying no-one else can run SUP competitions. The more SUP events, the better for SUP.

The fact that a Surfing Association wants to “control” SUP for themselves is causing politics, displaying bad sportsmanship and just making it downright unpleasant for everyone.

I don't know about them wanting to control it, but they do a pretty good job of running it (the surfing bit anyways). Professional judging and computerised scoring with commentry make for a pretty slick event IMO.

I would have thought it would have made more sense for SUPA to concentrate on the race side of things.

The thing that seems to get people's noses out of joint is the lack of communication regarding events. In Vic for example their original dates clashed with other events already on the calendar (from memory).

Personally I am happy to have both lots of events and will try to get to all of them, more the merrier

at a basic level there is nothing wrong with an organisation having a go.....but, one that is involved with more than one sup brand and that has handled itself they way SUPA has, clearly it hasnt got the backing of alot of punters.

people are speaking out, these are the same people that SUPA are trying to get as "customers".....maybe they should listen a bit more instead of going about there business with what seems a bit of an arogant attitude.

a question though, who are the majority of the loacl SUP clubs supporting....becasue after all, isnt that where it starts. ie you go to club comps, the afflieated state titles then earn the right for the nationals???

what does SUPA have to gain by calling there events state titles? They could really prove a point, like the surfing pro tour, and get it so good/big that it wouldnt matter what they called it, the best would come and that would get them the attention and coverage.....
